C300: Comparing the Panasonic EVA1 to the Canon C300II

Very well stated (Chris)! I didn't pre-order (and would never do that either). I'm buying the C200 or the EVA1 (SOON). My money is swaying me towards Canon C200...........

Canon's Cinema Line speaks for itself (tried and proven). I've owned MANY Canon and Panasonic products (C100, C100 MKII, C300, DVX100, AF100, GH4 and GH5, P2 Cams, etc.....)

I ONLY held out on my purchase to see footage from ACTUAL FORUM MEMBERS (regular contributors). But now just thinking about calling it a day (passing on EVA). If EVA turns out to be what it's billed to be.......well, let's wait and see.......

Last Thought: NEVER buy into the hype that it's a MUST to Pre-Order to get the latest camera. It WILL be in stock SOONER than later after initial shipping starts!!!!!

I now have the RED SW as my A-cam and the C200 as my B-cam or fast cam.

Any change of you finding the time to set them up side by side and share a few frames of .r3d and .crm?

I've been curious about how these two compare. Mostly interested in stuff shot in available light...

The C200 is a great camera right now, forward thinking and ahead of the curve, but, apart from the extra step in post of transcoding to get it edit ready, it is hands down a much stronger, sharper and cinematic image then both the C300 II and from what i've seen online so far, the EVA1.

Well said. C200 raw reminds me so closely my Scarlet MX and Raven (sold only because I'm often alone and can't deal with multiple 100W+ batteries). I just shot some footage on the EVA and the C200. Not side by side but inside the same rental. The C200 just pops, with much nicer character. EVA1 very nice, but definitely reminds me more of an FS7 with better colours. Not sure the 400mbit update will change that. Eventually raw, but who knows
If only the stupid "Canon raw development" app would give me option for lower than 4444 4K Prores..
Hope Apple will support Canon raw lite in fcpx soon

All my projects where I have used the both cameras side by side are either in post or cannot share just yet, I'll try something soon though.

But, I am not sure if you have seen this youtube clip with Scarlet-W and C200? I only just came across it and it may have been shared on the forum already but you get a sense of how the cameras can easily match

TBH: Lets face it, it's not difficult to match cameras these days with all the LOG modes on offer, I suspect I could probably match an FS7 just as well or BM-UP and I have also see the the tiny BM Micro Cinema Camera on gimbal shot compressed RAW edited alongside Epic Dragon and surprisingly matches really well.

For sure the RED SW is no low light king at all, you absolutely need lights indoors but I actually prefer the feel of the Dragon sensor image over the Helium still even though I know most people have switched over for the low light capabilities.
That's why the C200 is a good B-cam for those low light moments in uncontrolled setups.

Internal raw from the C200 is vastly superior to the Eva1 internal recording. To bad the internal MP4 is riddled with compression artefacts.

I only ever notice artifacts on under exposure or are you noticing compression artifacts in all the footage?

There's compression artefacts present in all footage that has some parts towards the dark side or large surfaces of single colour. When going to external recording there's also much more noise that may or may not mask other artefacts. Aggressive noise reduction in camera does introduce banding internally as well as externally recorded so it's useless.

Overall C200 looks nice but when I look at certain areas within a frame it's not looking good.

The EVA1 camera body itself is awesome. I'm blown away by the quality of what I'm getting out of it, so that's no problem for me. But the monitor reflectivity is so bad that it's effectively less than useless outside during the daytime. At night, no problems. On the other hand, if I ever need to see if I've got something on my face, it's just perfect. ;)
