C300: Comparing the 1DC and C300

This is a comparison we have had requests to see. Since we had seen the individual tests during the Camera Comparison Seminar earlier this year we were aware of where these cameras fall but since the EOS 1DC is such a different EOS Cinema camera there have been questions as to how these two compare if you down-res the 4:2:2 4K image to HD from the 1DC and compare it to the C300.

Visit our blog for the comparison results here: https://www.tvspecialists.com/prestablog-part-5-c300-and-1dc-n15/default

We hope you find it useful.

Thanks for the comparison!

The 1D-C sometimes feels like a gorgeous Go-Pro. Really incomplete feature set, with a lovely image, but no live exposure tools. And many other things that make you think the marketing dept got a bit too ambitious. Still, I love love love the idea of a dedicated cinema camera in the form of a stills camera (minus the mirror please!!!! Even some stills shooters could benefit from no mirror!). I even like the dslr shape better than the C300. There is almost no better way for me to shoot than a stills camera.

So, I really hope Canon makes the few necessary improvements in firmware, to make this an actual entry level pro cinema camera, Because I am so close to actually liking this camera($12k dslr!!!!), and then make bigger more ambitious changes to the next model. As of now the only thing cinema about it is the "C" badge, everything else is old school dslr. Even dslr's get nice images these days, have to do better than just unlocking 4k to make it cinema worthy, imho. Have to make it usable too.

I saw this a few days ago, and really appreciated the comparison. The 1D-C produces a strikingly beautiful image, and is something I really lust after. Unfortunately, for much of my work, it doesn't fit the bill - but I can see a lot of application for it and wish that I had more opportunity to use one!

It is a beautiful look. What makes it not work for you?

Much of my work is television broadcast, fast turnaround, abbreviated shooting schedules, and HD deliverable. If I had more request for 4K, I'd be all over the 1D-C. I realize that there are workarounds and rig solutions to make the 1D-C function more efficiently, but having everything I need on the body and in-camera makes the C300 the best option for me right now.

Hopefully, in the next few months, I'll have some projects come up that will warrant the 1D-C. I think it's extraordinarily good at what it does, and I hope to own one eventually.
