C300: compact slider dolly for C300

Hello,

Can anybody recommend a small portable slider dolly that they have used with their C300. We have the Dana dolly and it works great but I have a travel job coming up and need a more portable smaller slider dolly.

Thanks,

The edelkrone. I really liked it with a C100 and 1D-C. Amazingly small and solid. Also, nice to have the option to push along the track without seeing it in the shot. Couldn't find anything really wrong with it, except maybe if you are on a budget. Go with the longer, 3ft, version. 2feet isn't always enough.

(edit: the edelkrone may be more heavy than other sliders of the same functional length, but the edelkrone is far more compact.)
I dislike the edelkron rig, but the slider is right.

It might be a bit too small and cheap for your needs, but I bought one of these for a international job and I thought it worked great for the occasional slider shot:

It's just 2ft, but the price is right and the weight is great if you're needing to carry things with you to the shooting locations. I used it with a basically naked C100, zoom lens and EVF - it was smoother than the regular IGUS rails.

Sounds like you don't have the Edelkrone anymore though? Was it a loner, or do you in fact still have one? Been thinking about getting one myself. Long one seems nice, but reading their specs they call for pretty generous leg spacing/spreading on the tripod to use it.

Have you tried the long one?

It was a loner for a job. My friend has the 2ft version. I have not tried the 3 foot version, but found myself wishing I had more track too often with the 2foot version, and the 2ft version was so compact, I can't imagine an extra 6inches(1ft in use) being an inconvenience for the extra functionality.

The feet spread seems comparable to other sliders. I would think the edelkrone needs slightly more stability because the weight shift is bigger than other sliders, which have a pound or more of counter weight by not shifting everything to one side. but that would depend on the setup, as the difference is very small in my perception.

We setup the slider to be removable, so we didn't use it in 'static mode'. So, if anyone is planning to let the slider live on the tripod, (which the 2ft tempts you to do because it takes up so little space), then I am not sure how to advise.

That edelkrone looks amazing actually. I'm looking for a new slider (to keep semi-permanently mounted onto my tripod), never seen that one before!

The two problems I've experienced with having a semi-permanent tripod mounted slider are:

- Many of them have play in the carriage when you mount anything somewhat heavy onto it (ie. C100, any kind of video head)
- When using them with a one tripod setup they can bend when the camera is fully extended on one end.

Does the edelkrone suffer the same issues?

If you are going for semi-permanent, then look into the break (stopper) on the edelkrone. Make sure it is snug enough for traditional tripod moves.

As far as 'play' from one end to the other, I didn't notice any, and with a slider that is the first thing you will see if it is there. I have experienced that in the past with long cheap sliders, or smaller tripods. I have not tried the 3ft version, I imagine extending 5-10lbs and extra 6inches introduces a lot more torque, despite being such a small distance. But if you have a rugged tripod you should be fine.

Try before you buy, if you can. I liked the edelkrone, and I don't really like sliders. Hope that helps.
