Coming Out Is Hard To Do

hehe yeah the Mac switch is pretty nice. I ended up getting one of the new Mac Pro's. It takes a bit of getting used to, coming from windows, but just in the few short days I've had it I'm starting to really love it.

Tonight, I plan to load up all the entries and watch them on the AppleTV. It's kind of crazy when I think about it...but my whole house is Apple now...MacBook Pro for the wife, Mac Pro for me, Apple Extreme Base station and AppleTV. 5 years ago I would have laughed at the possibility!

Anyways, I'm all psyched for the next fest already! Note to self: No handheld camera work, and figure out some creative lighting :) Plus, all the other stuff like sound etc. God I wish I lived near some of you people that were doing these fests :)

Jaime, this was a quirky film with some unique subject matter. Some of the comedy beats worked better than others. The initial conversation between the couple for example. I think the punchline could have been stronger, but this was a good effort all in all.

Hey, good job on getting the entry in. The one thing that really stood out with this piece was that the living areas just didn't look lived in. I'm not sure if it was the white walls or the camera positions, but it just left things feeling a bit empty. Anyhow, the story flowed well and I'll owe that to the editing.

Nice short.

Shaky camera really annoyed me. It's like the operator was going out of his way to make it look shaky. Simply holding the camera as steady as possible makes it look handheld. The composition was nice though.

Editing and direction was very good. Since the camera was handheld, there could have been more movement (a step forward or a step backward to dolly in/out.) The flashback was especially nice.

Sound needs work. Production design would have made the film look much better. Even moving a few potted-plants around for the shots, or using coloured lights for the background would have helped (I strung up Christmas lights and moved potted trees and plants around to fill up the boring background in my short.)

Colour balance jumped between some shots. A couple shots were blurry.

All-in-all a good little short. I watched it a couple times.

mentatDuke - thanks for the critique on the story. I've had mixed results with the punchline...some people saw it coming a mile away, others didn't...seems about 50/50...not sure what to make of that, but I'm always trying to write interesting stories so I'll have to work on that more.

Bryce - thanks, yeah...the living areas were pretty much lived in...but I guess not decorated very well :) I think I've come to the realization that with zero budget, I have to be way more creative in decorating the set, and bribing my friends to re-arrange their rooms :). Or come up with a budget :)

pmark - Thanks for the advice re: handheld. Takes practice I guess....it wasn't deliberate on the camera-man's part. And I do agree you're right about the movement. I initially wanted hand held for the first scene because I wanted some movement (of which at least there was a little) but I didn't do anything with it throughout the rest of the film!

Jack - hmmm...maybe it's my subconscious rearing it's head! thanks for watching and taking the time to post!
