Hi everyone.
I'm helping out a friend with a film of hers. To make it more challenging, I decided to colour correct each shot in Shake seperately, soften it up and add film grain. The footage was captured to a 30i NTSC project in Avid Xpress Pro, then using the reference files deinterlaced in AE with Magic Bullet, exported lossless, and then imported into Shake for post-processing. The corrected footage was then exported lossless again, therefore not downgrading the footage in any way so far.
Knowing that I now must re-encode the corrected footage, instead of going with DV25 which will certainly degrade the quality, I went with the DV50 codec to preserve as much information as possible. Overall this encoding routine has had be irritated for quite a while now, but only today I discovered an odd bug.
When I export a sequence with the colour corrected footage as a reference file from Avid and open it in QT, the colours don't appear the way I see them in Avid. They look clamped up as if the footage was re-encoded with a DV25 codec, which is not the case since the reference file is pointing to the OMFI DV50 files. However, if I export into a new lossless file from Avid, so that the DV50 footage is reencoded back into lossless as a self-contained QT file, the colours look right.
I have no idea why this is happening. When I go to the properties of the exported reference file, I can see that the bitrate is 50mbit which is what it is.
Has anyone had this issue? This really makes me want to switch to Final Cut or back to Premiere. As far as I remember, both can work with video files directly, so I can edit using the original lossless colour corrected QT files. The files have crazy bitrates, but at least I'll preserve the quality.
Thanks in advance.
