Color problem

Lately I've experienced that the footage I see on my DVX, is much better than what it is when I import it. It's like I've changed the white balance during capturing, which is impossible.

Its way warmer than I want it to be, It's not THAT bad, but it has happend before, while shooting a speach at a wedding, the guy looked orange after import. Frustrating!

Thanks!

You mean the footage on the DVX LCD looks different? or are you using some sort of monitor with your DVX?

Also, you've got some nasty interlacing going on there (look at his hand). What mode are you shooting in, and what program are you editing in?

Also #2, is your monitor calibrated on your machine? have you looked at the footage on any other monitors? a TV?

Yeah, I'm aware of the interlacing, but that picture is from the raw footage, without de-interlacing and color correction.

I'm not using any monitors, but it looks way different on the dvx than it looks in FCP. I have an iMac. I'll go check it on my TV, and see if there's a difference!

Hmm, it looked good on the TV - alike the dvx.
So, its either the callibration or something in fcp then?

Could also be the difference between how things look on a TV (or the LCD) and how things look on a computer monitor. Usually not the same.

If you shot 24p, you do not want to deinterlace. You want to remove pulldown. It's not the same thing.

You need to calibrate your monitor.

What are you on? an imac with the monitor already attached, or a seperate monitor (what kind)?

Here's a couple of article's on how:

http://www.synthetic-ap.com/tips/calibrate.pdf

http://accad.osu.edu/~josterga/colorbars/

There's PLENTY more... just google it...

Let me know how it turns out, by the way.

I'm using an 24" iMac with the monitor attached. Its this one: http://www.svmlemag.fr/files/Must-SVM-253-Ouverture.jpg

I'll try the articles when I get home! Thanks guys ;)

I tried the method described in the pdf document you linked, but I think thats for external video monitors, like the ones we use on set?

Theres a calibration-thingy in the iMac which I tried, and it turned out OK. I'm gonna get myself a video-monitor pretty soon, to use both while editing, and while shooting. Hope it'll help.

Thanks again!

Yep.

The default settings on the LCD are waaaay brighter than real life. You can't judge what you're gonna get by that...

...unless you adjust it first. (And even then it will only be close.)

Put color bars up on the camera LCD and use the instructions for a real monitor as best you can to get the LCD close.

Be warned: setting the LCD to be correct-ish may result in you not being able to see things well under certain shooting conditions. Unless you get a hood for it, or similar.
