Re: Color Grading samples...

Quite interesting, would be nice to see some video !!

What software did you use to do the grading ?

Thanks,
Derrick

Re: Color Grading samples...

Hey Bluespider

Those are some really nice effects that you did. I got a little sscared when I saw that weird girl with that blood! NIce effect

Please share what you did and what software you used!

Re: Color Grading samples...

I don't like to say this but I have to:

Is any wrong with your camcorder? Why do you have to color correct your video so dramaticaly? You can do this with your cancorder without any surgery.

You ordered your DVX because it is better than other camcorders, right? Than use all the edges your camcorder gives you. You don't have to use the Magic Bullet just because it was in the package for free. Adjust your settings in the camcorder to get what you want and you gonna make more better pictures than with the Magic Bullet.

You proved that you can color correct a video with your software. Just delet it now and start using your Magic DVX.

Re: Color Grading samples...

I have to disagree. I like to shoot everything as cleanly as possible to limit noise and then create the EXACT look I want in post. It's the most flexible and provides the best images IMO.

Re: Color Grading samples...

..same here. ...i didnt buy the dvx so i could tweak the colors in camera and i doubt anyone has bought it for the ability to do so. it takes alot longer to do things in camera as opposed to in post, and you dont have nearly as many options or abilities available. some of the looks posted above would certainly not be achievable in camera, and grading your image in the camera would only tint or skew what your need to do in post to take it further... of course if you know what you want, and have run tests, thats not always a bad thing, but 35mm is usually corrected in post too ..its not like its any lesser to do so.

Re: Color Grading samples...

Ok, you did buy your DVX because the free Magic Bullet.

Just kidding. But all the originals posted here can I reproduce with a Samsung palmcorder for lat's say 150$ on e-bay. You don't need the DVX to make pictures like this.

The 1st After picture: I can make it with DVX's ND filter and WB.

2nd After: chose a camcorder from K-mark, I do it with it.
etc.etc.....

You can do it much better than this. I guess it was the first try with a DVX100. But during those years you learned all the functions in your camcorder. Use it. You payed a lot of money for something you don't use. Why?

If there is something you can't creat with your camcorder than use glassfilters.

And if there is a FX you want , use your Magic Bullet.

...while the "before" pictures may not be the finest examples of DVX imagery i have seen, they are not in the realm of palcorder quality. ...IMHO you are severely misguided on the technical aspects and abilities of the DVX vs cheap consumer equipment.   if i could pull of what the  dvx can do with a 150.00 plamcorder.. i would own a 150.00 palmcorder instead of the DVX.  Im curious as to why you would even make statements like that.

;)..no worries though, ..enjoy your palmcorder.

Re: Color Grading samples...

Is Sergej looking at the same pics as the rest of us...? It's either just me, or these are pretty cinematic "good ol' DVX" quality aren't they..?!

Good graps BLUESPIDER - well done! :P

What Postpro grading software did you use?

I don't understand other DVX users. Why is it so that everything made by a DVX has to be awesome? It isn't. If it was, than everyone here should post videos like disjecta's. But they don't. Why? Did disjecta got an other kind of DVX, or it isn't up to your camcorder only and the use of the camcorder has a major roll.

I don't want to argu with you, I'm not here to argu but I don't like constant ass kissing. If a picture isn't good than just to reply "oh men, it is fantastic" can't help it.

There are 2 kind of critics. The one to distroy your image, which makes you to be a full, which shouts out you are an amateur and hasn't got other intention than to pull you down to the dirt. And the other, which we can learn of it. I was just trying to stimulate others to use the DVX because you can make more with it than you imagine.

(BTW Disjecta use a lot of post)

So you have to face it. The second before picture shouldn't be made with a DVX. And it has definitely an palmcorder look.

Re: Color Grading samples...

AndyJ

Yes, definitely the same pictures. And I'm talking about the Before pictures. If you mean the Befores are filmic than why color corret, and if you can do the same with your ND and WB than why use more time to extra post processing?

If you have to color correct because you aren't happy with your shoot, than you say ok it isn't good.

The last pictures I couldn't make with a pure DVX just because here eyes. But rest of the picture , yes, I could. And if I can than you can as well.

Re: Color Grading samples...

...i know where your coming from.   i dont see anything wrong with doing things in camera.. its just more time consuming, and requires more know-how and ability/experience most of the time.

..im not saying the grabs are the best thing on earth. the first 2 grabs do look palmcorderish to me, but thats because they are a little overexposed, and it appears as though the master ped was set high.

..but that doesnt justify claiming that you can match the standard dvx with a palmcorder. even if you could manage to match the overall image tonality depth of a sub par DVX image. you still wouldnt be matching the sheer resolution and image fideility. not to mention the motion rendition. .. in short if the "before" images had been aquired optimally without tweaking colors in the camera, your not going to come close to touching them with a 150.00 palmcorder. and he would have plenty of room to change his mind about a color scheme in post.

..aside from this , i dont see how  butt kissing  or honsety about the quality of someones work really has anything to do with the original post you made, or the points which i was negating. .. anyway.. i dont care to argue with you either  ;)
i believe honesty is the best policy, but honesty can come in many forms, and leaving someone felling bad abouyt thier work is usually not the right way to deliver honesty. so constructive criticism is generally preffered to plain criticism. in this case. i just didnt see anything criticizeable about his choice to color corrrect in post.. you on the other hand did. which is ok . we disagre, and thats what make ths world interesting. ;)

Re: Color Grading samples...

whatever, sergej. I'm sure you mean well, but we all have different ways of working. By all means post your work here so we can learn from it and ask about your methods, but I would hesitate to be so judgmental.

Re: Color Grading samples...

"..but that doesnt justify claiming that you can match the standard dvx with a palmcorder" - I didn't say that. That's why I'm saying do it with your DVX because it gonna be better.

But I say:
The 1. Before - I can make with a samsung miniDV I guess. You too
The 2. Before - with my cellphone.
The 3. Before - I don't think I can with a samsung ....
The 4. Before - Yes I can with more cheaper camcorders as well, and you can too.
The 5. Before - Yes, and you can too
The 6. Before - Yes , and you can too

And the post production software could make you the same After pictures.

And you mention than "the first 2 grabs do look palmcorderish to me, but thats because they are a little overexposed, and it appears as though the master ped was set high. " So it wasn't good at all.

Than it is funny to read :
"Posted by: CMessineo Posted on: Today at 8:42am
Those are really fantastic. "

I know he is pointing to the final images. But what about the original footage?

My first impression was: Why use a DVX if you can make those After pictures from those Before pictures, just buy 1 more Magic Bullet and that's it.

He can do it much better with his DVX but this Magic Bullet makes people lazy.

I now my expression, words and phrases aren't right. I am ready to take the blame for it. But "ass kissing" is killing me.

BLUESPIDER - sorry if I was hurting you, that wasn't my intention. [sub]just delet this bloody magic bullet and work with your camcorder, [/sub]

Re: Color Grading samples...

When people post grabs here that need work, I try offer helpful advice, but I don't tell them there stuff is great.

However, I do think these are fantastic.

I think the composition, the sense of story in each one, is quite compelling.

I don't really care how someone got to their final images, whether they are untouched, color-corrected, or shot with a cell-phone (which you seem to think is an option). I just care about the result and these were excellent to me.

Re: Color Grading samples...

Alright, first of all, I've never used Magic bullet for anything. This camera was bought at NABB 2 years ago. We didn't know a whole lot of what this camera is capable of. Now I know its potenital but it doesn't mean I'm going to tweak its look. All this was done using just levels in Premiere Pro. I used no other 3rd party plugin. I always shoot my footage as raw and as clean as possible. If you want to tweak your look on your DVX, fine I really don't care. If you want to shoot black & white and expect to bring the colors back in post good. No need to hate my friend.
