when matt sent me the rough cut and I saw that, I think I said "Jesus Christ" in my best Ben Gazzara voice. those fixtures are only $8 at home depot so all was quickly forgiven.

I love the look on his face when the light falls. It seems like you cut just before he starts cracking up.

Funny Stuff in your outtakes. One thing- I thought the image looked a little better in the outtakes than the movie. The blacks were blacker, and the final version they seemed gray and a bit noisy. At first, I didn't think it was RED footage because of that.

Thomas actually never broke character during that entire sequence which I think is incredible.

Which scenes did you think looked better in the outtakes?

The home depot fluos sound like a good idea for shots that require a large bank of light. How were you able to handle the color temperature issues with them since they're off the shelf lights not meant for filmmaking?

Thanks. Enjoyed the film a lot watching it over and over. :)

you can ask Matty_g but the lights I gave him were all balanced to 5500k. they were not your typical fluoros with a green cast.

lets hear it for the comedies this fest. Really solid technically. I really like how the comedy was allowed to develop during the smashing scene. Well done.

was the outside audio ADR?

look for the ones advertised as "natural daylight" that sort of thing.

Yeah, they're super helpful. We did have to roto thomas in the shrine scenes and bring down his green a little bit. It's definitely not perfect but it's a great cheap solution. They're especially great for in-shot practicals.

Also, it looks like my thread about other submissions outtakes got deleted. So for anyone who is late, in my sig I posted a link to outtakes from this short.

He's a great actor, and definitely gives off some Steve Carrell vibes but with his own 'thing

I went home and compared the image from the outtakes to the movie and it was a case of monitor-out-of-whack at work. The movie definitely looked better all around. It's still a bit noisy, but I'm sure that has a lot to do with the compression.

BTW- I love the corny music at the end. So Perfect!

This is fantastic, and I loved the outtakes. Your lead actor is excellent, he's like a cross between Adam Sandler and Steve Carell.

Great work. Good luck in the fest.

It's a play on the Cantina song from Star Wars. A very nice touch.

Yeah, we were really torn about whether the music was too corny at the end. It's going to an emotion place and then we kind of pull the rug out from underneath the viewer and say "HEY! it's a comedy". We had a couple more serious scores ready to go. Does anyone else have thoughts on the music at the end?

i felt like that turn from emotional realism to something closer to slapstick had been made with the smashing of the toys, so the goofier cantina-spoof music seemed like a natural fit.

Hmm. So even the daylight balanced ones still give off a bunch of green? I wonder if I should even bother if that's the case. I was planning to stop buying anymore tungstens and just go with those instead of an HMI...

Thoughts?

Watching outtakes now...

It's not a bunch of green, but they're definitely not perfectly balanced or anything. They're definitely worth using, give them a shot. it will cost you $15

Ha!
We had:
1 x 1.2 HMI par (mag. ballast) borrowed
1 x Lowell Rifa Light
1 x 2x2ft household flou borrowed
4 x 1x4ft household flou borrowed
a handful of practicles.

Bought 1 ringlite from home depot.

Did not even have C stands for this one. Just propped things up on chairs (except the hmi had a combo)

Most of this was shot on a 50mm lomo square front anamorphic lens. So we pretty much just walked the camera around for different angles.
No handheld in this one.
I was gonna ask about whether you had used an anamorphic lens or if you added those sexy ass anamorphic flares in post. Now I don't have to ask.
