Cold Weather Tripod.

I'm looking to get a new tripod for my HVX but have heard some mixed results from asking around. I'll be shooting mostly in the winter time so I need something that won't freeze up in cold temperatures. Any suggestions?

Most all fluid heads will get a little stiffer in cold weather. This can be compensated with dampening. So, make sure you get a head with adjustable drag.

Hi Paul,
and in the case of my part of the world, most fluid heads get really loose in the heat of the day, making the first 75% of drag absolutely useless, dosent matter what brand head you use. I've used Millers, Sacthler, Vinten, Manfrotto... all in my experience have only 25% or less drag that's useable in temps over 37c.
I believe that most heads are designed for/in moderate climates, one day they may include a cold and or hot zone drag feature.

Cheers

I here you, it was 108f today here in Phoenix, AZ. It get so damn hot you can't touch anything metal.

Heat and cold are both equally hard on gear.

Thanks for the help guys. Has any had any experience with carbon legs in the cold? From what I have heard they are a little delicate but that could just be a myth.

HI Stephen,

Yes a myth, (just cold on the hands) My Current sticks Vinten Vision 11 system has carbon fibre legs, no issues hot or cold, best feature of the carbon fibre is the light weight, But treat them well and they'll treat you well, smack em about like a "staff news person", and they'll not last as like anything else that's not "owner operated".
best bet is to ask your video colleagues in your region what they use and make your decision from there. most of us have good or bad runs depending on our shooting environments.

Goodluck
