You can see it's a little shakey, probably her iris was wide open due to lack of light in the room. You'll notice the abundance of light coming from the closet and the practical side light but little or no front light - this is because this set up is intended to read as silhouette in camera.

1st AC Jules, doing a light gag meant to read as ambient light from the phone screen with wind up flash lights.
 
The phone light thing is awesome. Reminds me of the Ikea LED strips my DP pulled out of his bag o' tricks on our shoot.

Shotguns are for outdoors mostly, Robbie.
Indoors you should be using a cardoid or hyper cardoid condenser mic.

Barry is using the Oktava - the HMC-150 of cardoid / hyper cardoid condensers mics depending on which head you have on it. (I say HMC-150, because it's the best bang for the buck and comparable to much more expensive mics).

The ball on the end is called a ball gag.

And just to add as perhaps this is whats throwing robbie off - baby ball gag on that oktava to reduce "wind" noise from boom swing.

eta - and buy that DVD there Robbie, just about everything you need to know to get started in good professional sounding audio for your films.

As soon as I get my Credit Card I'm buying that video for audio.

Yeah I'll second Jack's advice - I'm still paying off mistakes I made 8 years ago when I was 18. I was stupid and thought credit cards were free money and I'd just pay it off later. Well now I'm paying it off. Yippeee! If you dont have money dont buy things. Bored cause you cant spend money? Work more :)
