I don't know much about Apple or Final Cut Pro but I've been using the free DNxHD Avid codec http://www.avid.com/dnxhd/ and like it. I belive it has a Mac version too.

DNxHD is awesome! The free side is a huge plus too. 10-bit mode is fantastic for coloring.

Yea, if you don't have ProRes, DnxHD is clearly the best other option.

so can you point me in the right direction on what to download but for mac? So this is a stand alone application like compressor that will work just fine to trans-code 7Dfootage other than Pro Res?

little digging around on the net and this is what i came up with on how to use and what to download:

go to avid and search for dnxhd (here ) Pick either PC or MAC version. Your only downloading the codec that will appear in mpegstreamclip as you select your transcode options.
Download mpegstreamclip.
run mpegstreamclip, use dnxhd as intermediate codec, drop into your NLE and edit!

I'll have to give this a shot.

Sure, have at it. Works just fine, produces stunning results. Avatar was cut with DNxHD, as was Transformers 2, and a whole host of other major Hollywood movies.

what DNXHD settings do you guys use? I've found that the 10bit options are sparse compared to prores and the file sizes are much larger.
