My first shoot with the HVX200 - a 2 min clip shot on location on Dry Lake

After jumping through quite a few hoops, climbing up quite a few learning curves (some of which felt more like learning VERTICAL CLIFFS) and after battling quite a few bugs, I was able to complete my first test footage clip.

This was my first time shooting widescreen, first time with HVX200, first time using vegas 8 and first time working with high definition, MFX files and raylight.

All in all I did alright.

Thrown together real quick but still fun to watch and more importantly, captures well the spirit of START LINE at an SCTA Time Trial race on the dry lakes. Some of the shots will definitely make my film, but mostly, this was just for fun and practice and was shot run and gun without 35mm adapter since I have not yet received my Letus Extreme (but should anyday now hehehehe...)

Faith... That's a really really nice piece. Great style with some good shots. Nice light on the shots and overall really great mood piece. Like the shot going towards the tires and the ending is awesome. I think you've got a great style piece there for sure. The sound design was cool too but a bit much in parts in the beginning.. but better than just music. Are you going for a post modern 50's, rockabilly, tatoos and Betty Page looking piece?

WOuld love to see more.. really got the interest up there. What's your plans? Also... when you get the Letus can you do a bit of a right up about that. That's the Adapter that I want for sure too.. Seems like the best one out there right now and thank God it does the flip and only looses a stop.

Congrats on this and what's your next step?

That looks like a fun day of shooting.

I know about the hoops, curves, and cliffs. I'm just starting out with the HVX (any camera really) but man has it been fun to watch the images that it produces come to life.

Look forward to the next installment.

p.a.h.

Well, wouldn't you know it? I JUST got my Letus friday :). It looks very nice, solid, but I have been painting my office all day yesterday and did not even have a chance to mount the adapter to the HVX. As soon as I do, I will post my first impressions.

The next step(s) for me is as follows:

1- Learn how to properly mount and use the Letus
2- Experiment with the 5 lenses I bought (I will post their specs for others to see, special thanks to Steven from dvxuser.com for his great help in helping me pick the right lenses).
3- Mon, Tue and Wed I am auditioning about 75 actors out of the 700 that submitted to be in Deuce Of Spades. All should be wearing 50's style clothes for the audition should it should be a sight to remember. Mots my parts have already been cast but I still have a few odd balls parts to fill. I will be filming the auditions as well as the process (as I am also making a documentary about the making of the Deude Of Spades - to be in the "Special Features" section of the DVD.
4- This month I wrap up pre-production. I have to find a DP to help with lighting and camera moves while I am in front of the camera. I need a few more crew members too. If anyone from this forum is interested, PM me (Los Angeles locals)
5- January first I kick in high gears and start production phase. Filming all modern day scenes, starting with unimportant ones so I can make my mistakes and learn from them and those scenes will be easy to refilm if need be.
6- By March 1rst I start the flashback sections of the film (around 55 minutes of them)
7- By summer I should be done with filming. I film on week-ends cause I have a day job so this is a LABOR OF LOVE.

The interresting thing I want to do is edit as I film. I plan to film on week-ends and edit that very footage during the week. Just a rough edit, to pick the best takes and the cameras. Sound and precise frame y frame editing will be done once the film is all pieced together.

That's what I did when I filmed the dry lake footage and it works great because everything is still fresh in your mind. You remember the shots. You remember the feel of how it was being there. So to me it makes sense since I can't film during the week cause of day job...

OK well that was the long answer but that's the road map of how I am going about making my full feature film.

GOOD NEWS: Nitro magazine, France's biggest hotrod magazine will do a full page write up on Deuce Of Spades.I already got a 3 page write up in New Zealand Hotrod Magazine (they even mentioned the film on the cover! That was such a great surprise:2vrolijk_08:) and a quarter page in V8 magazine (Finland). WHEELS magazine, biggest hotrod magazine in Northern Europe also wants to do a big write up once film is done. Looks like I'm getting around!

Great piece there Faith, are you editing the entire feature with vegas?

That's the plan, if all goes well. I am on PC so FCP is out andf I already know and like Vegas. the only unkown parameter here is working with mfx files and vegas not being compatible and having to use a third party plugin to make it happen. Resulting in a few surprise quirks and extra girations... but I hope to be able to pull it off. the film is not short it is 130 minute long.

I intend to edit each scene as it's own project and then import the scenes/projects into one big project timeline to put the film together.

Wish me luck !
