clueless FCP user, how to edit HD footage. Quicktime converting??

I shot a film in HD format, and now I can't open it on FCP. Apparently I have to change them into Quicktime files, how on earth do I do that?? Can it be done for free?

My computer is a MacBookPro, brand new. My version is FinalCutPro.6.

I'm a dummy when it comes to technology so I don't mind being talked to like a child hahaha.

in FCP:

under file, pull down to log and transfer. use the little plus folder icon in the top left to navigate to your p2 volume. then all your clips will appear in the list to the left. there you can set in and out points of your clips and add them to your project.

nope - fcp6 has native support for dvcproHD

There is even a detailed workflow with photos on how it is accomplished.

are you by chance using the P2CMS software to export your files with the protect switch on your card activated?

When you log and transfer, FCP automatically repackages the MXF files into QT files for you.

That's why you always backup the original p2 volume
