Clothing Release Promo - Need Feedback

Hello everyone. I recently shot/edited a promotional video for a friends clothing company to promote their fall release. It was shot on an A1 and I used Magic Bullet looks for grading. Take a look at it an tell me what you think of it.

This was my first time really doing color grading. I usually just color correct things that are off using the 3 way color corrector in FCP. We shot this video with all the lights on in the dorm room because I wanted the best quality image to work with and not have to worry about low lighting. I tried to make it look like it was sorta dark like early in the morning just as the sun is coming up.

What could I have done differently to make it better? Thanks in advance for any comments or feedback you may have.

Thanks DDP. One shot that I was scratching my head on was the shot when the girl gets out of the bed. It looks kinda weird to me but I can't put my finger on how to fix it. Any ideas?

Personally I'd cut the white stuff out of the foreground in that shot. It pulls my eyes down and away from the action. A little more focused light on the front of her legs wouldn't hurt either.
The shot following that is too wide for my tastes, I'd get closer.

Just my opinions, I'm a nobody...... :)

Just as a note the "preview" slate in the beginning can only be used legally if the MPAA has rated your film. I'll let someone else speak about the music.

Fun videos on youtube or quick test edit are one thing but when the new clothing company get sued, guess who they are gonna blame.

Thanks. Yeah that makes sense.

Yeah I thought that and I told them that it may be illegal but they wanted to add it anyway...same with the music. I put some language in the service agreement that says the they own the video and such. That should cover me right?

They own now,but they bought it from you and you did not have the right to sell it. I have been back and forth on this for years.

I did a Urban Fashion video 6 years ago and used music I should not have. They said that they could use the songs because their clothes were used in the videos. At the time I used the old adage no press is bad press.

I would have had anything with a logo turned around or greeked at the minumum. The spot, in it's current form, is commercially unusable.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Beyond the legal advice, are there any tips you can give to make my future videos better. Thanks in advance for the help.

I couple of the unstable shots didn't sit right with me. Specifically the first two shots (rubix cube and playboy), and a little during the last shot at :50/:51. Did you use smoothcam or anything in post?

Besides that, I thought it was pretty good. Especially a lot of the dolly shots. Pretty smooth. Keep it up.

Thanks man. Yeah I did use smoothcam. I shot those shots handheld and they ended up being to shaky so I used smoothcam. Is there a better option for this kind of thing? Or maybe I could tweak the settings of the smoothcam filter better. Anyone have any experience using smoothcam?

Just thought about something...I got that slate from a Royalty Free Stock Footage collection. Secondly, it doesn't say anything about the MPAA or a rating. I think I am fine to use that graphic however I want. Thoughts?

Yeah the shot where the girl gets out of bed is a little bit to dark , and it starts off a little shaky plus i think you cut something at the point where alarm clock gets slammed and once it's almost slided down it gets cut out.
The dolly shots were nice over the homework and the alarm clock getting slammed was good until the part. But if you were trying to capturing a morning shot i think it needs more light , it looked more like it was bedtime. You could maybe add a bright optical flare in there somewhere and have it masked out to the point where he's asleep. I like what you did with the scratching out school , that was nice. A thing i would put in would be a school bell and the text shaking for like a sec but that's just me. Once again the dolly shots are nice, just next time it needs a little more colour, that colour correction is for like dark atmospheres like for an action film or crime is what comes to mind when i saw it.

Yeah but it's all up to you. Like the other guy said , i'm a nobody too :)
