How well do HDSLR's do up against filming close to small miniatures while preserving the detail of it all?

The HD-DSLRs are capable of capturing great detail, up to the limits of the known issues with alaising/moire. If you are shooting miniatures as minitures (Like toy soldiers or model railways and the like) then you need to keep the known issues in mind. Your choice of lens and the depth of field you choose to work will also be issues that you will won't to take into consideration A close focus lens might be something you may want to look into. A Macro lens, or lens diopters are options to look into also.
If you are shooting miniatures to represent larger real world objects, as a special effect, then you are entering into a rather complex subject that I would research thoroughly. I would start with Raymond Fielding's book, "The Technique of Special Effects Cinematography".

The big issue with miniatures as special effects is scale. Try to work at as big a scale as you can afford.
