C200: CLM in Premiere Pro 2020 ( PC)?

Hi Everyone,

Just curious what the current situation is with editing CRM in Adobe Premiere Pro on a PC? The most recent info I can find is that Adobe was looking into a bug fix for laggy playback on PC's as of about four months ago. Does anybody know if this has been fixed in CC2020?

And on the whole, how does .CRM compare to, say, 4K .R3d? Is playback performance equal to .R3d or is it not quite as smooth. Are most people editing the raw, or mainly using a proxy workflow?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Can't speak to Premiere on a PC (although everything I've heard is that Premiere should function better on PCs), but I can certainly say that editing .CRM in premiere on my iMac has to be done with proxies. Would be interested to hear from someone with a beefier machine if they're editing .CRM without proxies....

I sold my C200 a couple months ago but am still editing a couple CRM projects shot on that camera. I'm able to work at 1/2 in premiere on Mac Pro tower and full res on an iMac Pro (no proxies). I haven't tested side by side, but my anecdotal impression is that 5k R3D is about the same performance as 4k CRM in premiere. I can play back both better/smoother in Resolve for some reason. It might help if we listed our specs.

Mac Pro (2012 - 12 core)
Xeon processor (don't remember the clock speed)
32GB RAM
Geforce GTX 1080
6G SSD storage

iMac Pro
3Ghz Xeon W
32GB RAM
Radeon Vega 56

Thanks for the replies so far. For those using proxies, I assume you're letting Premiere create them for you, rather than shooting proxies to SD card in camera?

I too am curious about exactly how the XF-AVC camera proxies work with the RAW files. Even if the file name is the same, the file type of .mxf versus .crm means difficulty, doesn't it? Letting FCP X make your proxies from ingested RAW works
great but it's massively time consuming. Anyone got an article, white paper or YT video on exactly how one uses the in-camera proxy to CRM file workflow? We've been making proxies in FCP X but it's tied up
an editing station for weeks because we have so much footage.

The last I heard about internal proxies was when it first came out and there was some sort of problem with the filenames not matching up between the two versions. Premiere probably released their proxy workflow around the same time so I guess it became the default "solution", but I am wondering if the Canon proxy workflow ever became viable.

Yep, and we use FCP X, not Premiere too. FCP X likes to make it's own proxies and it works really well once you've done it but on projects with a ton of footage, it takes forever.

BTW one thing I've noticed that affects performance more than I initially thought it would is disk speed and interface. I just tried working with C200 footage on that iMac Pro and it's on a USB3 5400 RPM drive and it's chugging at 1/2 in premiere. On an internal SSD no issues.

I know disk throughput always makes a difference, but it's even more pronounced with CRM than most other formats I've dealt with.

Right now, mainly using OWC 16TB RAID with T-Bolt 2 Interface into a top of the line 2018 iMac (not Pro). This RAID benchmarks around 600MB/s? Eventually I'd like to buy a larger T-Bolt 3 RAID as the speeds are significantly higher. But as it sits, this setup handles single camera Cinema RAW Light no problem. Multiple cameras, then I have to do proxies.

It's a pretty simple (albeit annoying) fix. Use a file renaming app and just add "roxy" to the end of the internal proxy files (which normally end in "_P.mxf" so it ends in "_Proxy.mxf" then Premiere will link with the checkbox clicked for "match file names". Works like a charm.
