I use my camera for desert racing, and i put it through some harsh conditions. I am wanting to clean my camera, I try not to use canned air on the video heads due to the chemicals in the can. When i send the camera in to get cleaned, do they take the camera apart, or do they just use basic products (head cleaners, air, etc.). Do you guys clean your own camera or send it out?
Can you give me some tips as to cleaning and protecting the heads.

In the sand huh? I would send it to Canon to have it checked out. In the future, don't shoot in those conditions unless you have protection for the camera.

I always tape my camera, and i have a cover for it. But i mainly just want to do a maintance clean after every race.

Take a battery powered Dustbuster with you. Run a damp rag and don't change tapes out there, airborne grit causes tape dropouts. Always start with a new tape.

Tape over unused ports and switches with black low tack CLING brand tape. Most proprietary rain covers get the A1 too hot in the sun. Cover the A1 in a plastic rubbish bag after every race. Cheers.

Jip. From what Ive read when changing of tapes its the airdust that kills the heads and should always try doing it in a controlled enviroment and as quick as possible - same as SLR cameras lens changing. I must say that I have now and again used a can duster to just blow over my heads after a day in the field and do often with my DSLR! I actually carry a little one to blow dust out of the lens between takes! Just make sure that you dont blow any chemicals in the compartments by blowing in the air first after a shake and can always held upright!
