Class 6 or Class 10?

Hey what's up. Just wondering if anyone has tried out these Class 10 SDHC cards yet. At the moment I'm using a Class 6 SDHC card from RiData. Works great, I noticed from the handbook it said use Class 6 cards. And I have seen here on this board that Class 6 and 4 work fine. Just checking to see if spending the extra money on a Class 10 is worth it or not.

Thanks in advance!

I have the class 10 and class 6 cards. And the class 10 cards are now the same price as class 6 cards here. Panasonic is simply replacing the class 6 cards by class 10 cards.

Class 10 cards should be simply a little bit faster to transfer on the computer. But during the recording, you should not notice any difference.

IMHO, you should avoid class 4 cards. They are the minimum spec recommended and can be more prone to bugs, especially with 32 GB cards.

I too have both Class 6 and 10 cards and they both work fine. I've found the Class 10 cards to be relatively the same price as Class 6 as well.

So the only real difference between the class 6 and 10 cards functionally is the 10 have faster upload times when transfering to the computer? Is it appreciably faster?

Hi, I've been using the pricier Panasonic cards because everyone was reporting trouble last year w/ QC on others.

Any suggestions on brands? I was going to get the 32gb class 6 Trancend. I have the 16gb Panny's and they've been flawless. But the price is a killer! Thanks, Ron

A naive follow up: is there really a difference in the type of cards beyond class and name? What I mean is that SanDisk has many different class 6 cards, and the ones with fancier names are obviously more expensive, sometimes significantly so. What extra does one buy with that?

I think it comes down to the speed of the chips that are used in the card, and the quality of the physical construction.

I became of big fan of Patriot cards after testing 6 different brands, and the Patriot cards consistently performed better than most of the competitors.

I know that SanDisk cards are good cards too, but I don't see any reason to pay a premium for them over the Patriot brand. ( both are fast, both are reliable, both have a 5 year warranty )

Does the type of reader have any effect on speed? And which is the fastest using class 10 cards?

The SanDisk Extreme III cards are supposed to read at 34 MB/sec if you use a SanDisk high speed reader. I own this reader, but found that it was no faster with non-SandDisk cards. ( I don't own a SanDisk card to confirm the 34 MB/sec claim )

Most of the better brands of SDHC cards will read at 20 MB/sec, but not many cards will write faster than 15 MB/sec. ( Patriot IRIS / Patriot LX / SanDisk Extreme III all write fast )

Yes the type of reader can make the differance, most are USB2 readers but you can get firewire readers which can be faster.

Iirc the normal avg sustainable speed of usb2 is 40MB/s, some of the firewire800 cards are faster.

cheers

oops my bad, wrong links sorry, ill ammend my post.

I was remembering the ones i used on my canon 40d which were damn fast, im sure there were some sdhc ones too.

I know you can get adapters which let you mount sdhc cards in CF firewire readers, with the constant increase in card speeds
i think the best bet will be the new USB3 readers being developed soon :)
