Class 10 SD vs. Class 6 SD

I was searching in this site for information on how a class 10 card differs from a class 6 and found this: "update to the latest firmware to use Class 10 cards." Can anyone please explain what this means? Thanks.

it means you need to upgrade your firmware (camera operating system)
you have to update the software in order to use class 10 cards ,they were not available when the hmc 150 was launched so an update is necessary to use them
you can get the updates from Pass

What is firmware? Camera operating system? Which software? Do you mean the editing software? The conversion software? The uploading (AVCCam viewer) software? Do you have to do anything to the camera itself? What is "PASS"? Sorry, you really have to dumb it down for me. Thanks so much.

Thanks, Barry. Do you intall this operating software inside the camera or in the computer? Thanks.

The PDF file in the link explains the procedure. You download it to the computer, connect a USB cable, and the computer updates the software inside the camera.

do you really need a class 10 card for the 150? will it help, or not do much. And also I read someone said that the 150 had issues with a 32gb card, is that still true?
Thanks.

I dont have any issue with my Panasonic class 10 32GB card and my Sandisk Extreme 32 GB.

You should avoid cheap class 4 32 GB cards. It's always better to stay with genuine Panasonid and Sandisk cards.

I am going to try the transcend with the HMC150. In my canon they work just as good as Sandisk. The price of a 32 GB class 10 is around 50 to 60 dollars. Pretty good deal!

Fast class 10

Fast class 10

SD cards will only get faster as time goes by. The Class 10 cards move data faster off the card onto the computer if your interface allows more speed.

Now, if Panasonic wants to give the 150 over and undercrank capabilities, maybe the Class 10 cards will do the trick.

Otherwise, Class 6 works just fine.

Actually on the HMC150 or any of the AVCCAM cameras, Class 4 works just fine. Any faster than Class 4 is unnecessary.

The way the "class" system works, is the guaranteed minimum write speed, in megabytes. Class 4 is guaranteed to support at least 4 megabytes of minimum sustained write speed. It doesn't necessarily follow that a Class 10 card would be faster to offload to a computer, as there's nothing in the "class" designation that talks about minimum sustained read speed. I believe that as a practical matter, faster write speeds and faster read speeds go hand in hand, so a Class 10 card certainly should be substantially faster to offload than a Class 4. But it's not guaranteed to be that way. The guarantee is for minimum sustained writing speed.

I have a 150 on order. Should be here Mondayish. Can I assume it will already be updated to ver 1.20?

or, is this something that just came up recently? I assume B&H doesn't keep these things in stock for months and months......?

I couldn't tell from the pany site when they started shipping with ver 1.20 (or have they?)

The 1.20 firmware update was just released two weeks ago. I guess it's possible that B&H's stock would be updated, but I wouldn't be surprised if the units on the shelf today don't have the update pre-installed.

Thanks B
I assume the ver# is available through one of the menus? (I naturally ordered 2ea 32 Gig sandisk extreme class 10s for this and a Canon 60d, so, of naturally it won't work ;-( )

I got mine from B&H about a month ago and it was already updated to 1.21. I guess Panny doesn't release the firmware update right away.

Don't compare them. There is a reason why the Transcend cards are cheaper than Sandisk.

And look at this board, you'll see much more people having issues with Transcend than Sandisk cards. And the Transcend cards will break easier because it is not resine encapsulated.

Me, I cannot take a chance to loose any footage, so I prefer to pay the price and have a higher quality card.

Ramkuma, no one actually answered this part of your question, so here goes ...

Think of your HMC150 as having an embedded computer processor in it (as it does) and that computer needs an operating system to run. The operating system software is written to persistent internal memory in the camera, part of the electronic chip set within the camera, rather than a hard drive such as what is found on a normal computer. This type of software is termed "firmware" as it is actually stored in a programmable read-only-memory (EEPROM) chip, and is not erasable or replaceable except via the update procedures provided by Panasonic. All the functions in the camera are controlled by the computer running the firmware program, so for example, if there was a spelling error in a menu or some other bug /defect, Panny would correct the bug and provide a new version of the firmware for you to download and install into the camera, thereby fixing the defect. Sometimes new features are added via this mechanism, such as adding the support for Class 10 SDHC cards.
