hey hi, just thought I'd share this promo for Citizens Here and Abroad's recent album 'Ghosts of Tables and Chairs'. The track is 'Appearances'.

My first shoot with the DVX and I love it... presented it down in LA at the last RES event and it looked great even projected 50ft wide; people were asking if it was shot on 16 or 35.

Thanks Jarred & everyone for maintaining such an awesome resource!

JasonK,

That looks phenomenal.

I especially like the lighting and your editing.

Very slick.

Great work. I loved it and one of the best Ive seen. Very professional and first rate. The light effects were awesome and the use of the KINOS (right?) were wonderful. The song does kick ass; reminds me of 90's Alt Rock.

Great job!

Re: citizens here and abroad

Really nice!!!! I love it. How did you do the light effect? It's really cool. Very smooth.
Congratulations.

Re: citizens here and abroad

very nice stuff!!! The light writing was a real simple idea ( the best ones always are) and executed perfectly.

good job

Re: citizens here and abroad

thanks thanks, i'm glad you're liking it.

the lighting effect was surprisingly simple... in theory. the characters were drawing in the air with little LED keychains; we tracked them in after effects and used a particle generator (trapcode particular, it's awesome) to create the trails behind it, adjusting the physics of the environment to get closer to the movement of the real camera.

a few more promos in production right now, can't wait to show 'em!

I agree and that I think is what made this so nice. Nothing pretentious, just chillin.

Re: citizens here and abroad

ps: yes, kinos. my new favourite thing ever.

except the fisher dolly with a monster jib arm we're going to be hauling around next weekend :)

Re: citizens here and abroad

Did you use any filters on the camera for this. It looks like there was maybe a black pro-mist. Looks very good by the way.

Re: citizens here and abroad

thanks! no filters except my overpriced uv. it might be the colour correction, and i also have a little trick i do in after effects to soften it up a little bit.

but i got jarred's filter test dvd in the mail the other day and some of them look pretty interesting. looking forward to trying some of that out!

Re: citizens here and abroad

Wow, definatly one of the best looking videos I have seen here. Great, simple concept, as it has been mentioned before, it looks like you really take time to work with the group and extend what they have written in the song to the video. I'm so sick of videos where the song can be about anything, even your neighbors dog, but the video takes place in a dance club with all your friends and lots of people dancing and grinding in slow motion. Someone needs to fill these people in on a little concept known as, well, concept!!!!

Great job

Re: citizens here and abroad

awesome use of the kinos. also great work with the trapcode plugin (i thought it was 3dstroke).
what is your softening trick in AE?? ;)

Re: citizens here and abroad

hey man, that was awesome, i started watching some other stuff on your site and its really really sweet. What did you use to shot those "my View" of the different cities?

yeah and waht did u use to timetravel to norway in december 2004 ;D

Re: citizens here and abroad

alpi - the softening trick is to take your final output, duplicate it over itself at about 25%, compress the contrast and add some blurring. messing with the transfer modes affects whether the shot gets bloomed or darkened, and it softens it up just a wee bit eh.

thanks so much watson. all the myview stuff was shot with a sony trv900. i'm really looking forward to seeing how the DVX performs in the same kind of stuff!

Re: citizens here and abroad

hahaha yeah, a friend pointed that out to me last night but i haven't had a sec to fix it yet :)

Re: citizens here and abroad

you know, lately there have been clips that are very good. this one especially lighting wise. this camera is just awesome.

Re: citizens here and abroad

Wow! This is an absoutely spectacular video!--simple, moving, and effective. Best new music I've heard in a long while. Thanks for posting this. I think you've got the makings of a great career ahead of you.

If you could answer a few questions, it will be appreciated.

(1) There's a lot of theory about shooting squeezed v.s. anamorphic v.s. letterbox. You mentioned that you showed this video on a 50 ft screen. I'm curious to learn what lens you used (wide adapter, anamorphic, etc.) and whether you set your camera squeezed or not.

(2) In showing your video on a 50 ft screen, was this done via a digital projector?

(3) How long was your longest dolly track? The dolly track in the middle of the video (where the band members are standing still) seems at least 100 feet long.

Again, terrific video! Thanks for your time!
