Cion Pricing $4995

I think the Blackmagic Ursa Mini had everything to do with this price drop.

Gear pricing seems absolutely ruthless these days.

i am not sure why anyone would buy that camera? even that price does not include a finder.....and as much as i like the way it looks, the footage looks ok...not bad just nothing to make me go that way....too many options in that price range right now....and with the ursa mini coming....this looks desperate...at best...
the only way i see anyone buying this would be if the price was head to head or cheaper then the BM offerings with the same sensor...and even there i think the BMs delivers better image (but that is of course subjective...)

Wow, but you get a lot for your money at that price. Still, the sort of people that are looking to buy a camera in that price range are the type of people that wouldn't afford PL glass...

some of the ungraded cion footage posted on vimeo to my eye looks lovely, very nice color.

i had the cion on my shoulder at abel cine in nyc a few weeks back (abel cine is gr8!), and it felt great.

i did notice that the dr was narrower than some recent camera entries.

so it is clearly a camera that likes a thoughtfully lit frame.

whether it is worth $5k, well that really is up to each of us.

ymmv

be well.

This price drop is pretty brutal for the camera making industry. People would have beaten down doors for this camera a few years ago. The DVX-200 will probably need to come down away from $4999 :) if two other RAW cameras are occupying the space.

What choice did CION have ?

...You either compete against your competition or throw in the towel. I am curious to see what this camera will be like once their firmware has had a chance to mature.

The Cion feels decent on the shoulder, lots of ports and mounting options, build quality is excellent. Just not overly crazy about the image. I think it has under 10 stops of DR. In the right hands it can be made to look like it has more thanks to the Pro Res 4:4:4 colorspace. Put it this way, If I had to choose between this and the JVC LS300, I would go with Cion all day long even with the added expense to get it rigged up to shoot.

On the JVC vs. the CION, I think that is apples and oranges.....not comparable products. The JVC is doing 4K lite & 1080 broadcast. The CION is doing big-boy 4K with large file sizes....two, somewhat different markets. There is a difference in the chips but I won't go into that.....
