CineStyle for Nikon ANNOUNCED!

AWESOME! I loved cinestyle for a while on my t2i but i started to move away to the flatt profiles because i found the darks got too noisy when i shot in high iso's (which was a LOT of my time). But with the d600 i can handle a lot higher ISO with relatively little noise. Looks like its about time to try cinestyle again!

The D810 and D750 have a special flat profile for shooting video, but I still don't know if it is any good

I was at a local trade show here in Vancouver and quickly grabbed the D810, D750 and A7S and did a quick non-scientific comparison of their flat profiles. Unfortunately I thought the A7S was in full-frame mode but I now realized it was in crop mode (arrgh!), the Sony booth was kind of odd in that their A7S sample was defaulted to MP4 recording, Auto Exposure and in Crop Mode! But luckily I switched it back to XAVC and Manual Exposure, I just didn't catch the crop mode! All cameras were done in 24p...

Here is a comparison between the Standard Profile and the Flat Profile on the D750.

Thanks for the samples. Its really usefull to have a comparison between these 3 cams. Interestingly it didn't seem like the a7s had any advantage in the outstide highlight details. It just had brighter shadows, which would probably be pushed down anyway. THe interior wall by the windows seemed to be brighter with the D750 than the D810 while having the same highlights, which is good. In the comparison with standard profile the difference looks subtle at first, but there is more detail on the 2014 poster with 'flat' and the colour seems more natural.

It's nowhere close to what I would have liked to see. The camera can do 14 stops of DR, that's probably 10 or 11 (the usual for Nikon standard profiles with contrast dialed down)

I actually like that the profile isnt to flat. For a camera like this it seems like a good balance between ease of grading, quality of colour information and latitude. If its 12 stops it would be perfect. I would of course like the inclusion of something like slog2, but for a 8bit camera this seems like a good one for getting clean images with nice colours.

The 750 comparison - I see maybe a half stop more useable highlight data. the bright hot spot on the signage, above the "2014" text...

It's possible to be "too flat" with 8 bit footage, where shadow recovery looks blocky and highlight recovery just mucks up with JPEG artifacts.

"Too flat for 8-bit" is definitely not an issue on my a7s when shooting slog2, which I believe has A LOT more DR than this. Yet CineStyle on the Canons was definitely "too flat" for the small chunk of the 8-bit color space it used, and the bad codec my T2i had. A good codec helps a lot...

Hi ectobuilder, thanks for the three example above, could you upload those short clip or even send us at a frame grab in png so that we can play with them.

Looking at the above the D750 looks a little bit less contrasty, has the light change. I would also like to know if it is possible to raise the black in the flat profile as with the other profiles.
