Cineporter 2 info up at Spec-comm

Another big advantage of the Cinporter over the firestore is the P2 connection. With such a connection, it seems that it can use a BIG advantage of P2 who is the prebuffering, showing recorded scenes as thumbnails,... THAT'S GREAT... i hope. As far as i know, the firestore using the firewire connection can't do it. Am i wrong?

I should be able to get full answers tomorrow, but as far as I know the FireStore should be able to do all the same things. Even though it connects through the firewire port, it's being developed in partnership with Panasonic so they've probably engineered the thing together to have all those same capabilities. I know Jan's said that it will appear to the camera as a big P2 card, so it seems likely that it will have those same features.

i dont know how the firestore will register with the camera, its too early to tell, but they are pretty smart over there.

But, I think this is a better solution through the p2 slot because of the fact that you dont need to rely on that dinky 4 pin firewire cable.

not so sure, as a connections go this certainly seems more secure, but having the 1394 feed the hardrive you could also still shoot on p2 cards if you needed supa secure back up of a once in a life time shot, like lets say you ran into elvis...

well there are 2 slots in the HVX.. so you can have Elvis autograph that 8gb card in slot #2 if you want. and still have the cineporter in slot #1.

Not at the same time, but it will switch automaticly. And you shoulb be able to choose where you record something. Iow, the card in slot 1 or 2. Or move it around after you shot it. I guess... Barry? Jarred?

Isn't there a big issue with the FireStore for the HVX in that it will only do the 720 24p in a 60p stream? Then you need to remove the redundant frames at ingestion similar to the Varicam.

The HVX it'self removes the redundant frames from the stream as it goes to the P2 card so there is more room, but that a device plugged into the FW won't be able to do that even if the camera sees it as a P2.

The Cineporter plugs into the P2 slot which allows the camera to handle the removal before it's written to the Cineporter's drive.

Am I all wrong on this? I think Jan even confirmed it?

How hard will it be to fashon an extension for the cable and throw this thing (with it's battery) into my pocket (or backpack)?

This unit and the Firestore unit solve the problem of recording a CONTINIOUS event which runs for an hour or so. The drive will run continuously and the battery should be designed to support one or two hours of this type of operation.

The type of shoot that these units do not support very well are those which entail shooting an hour or more of video consisting of 8 to 10 second clips taken at random intervals over a 8 to 10 hour period. For this type of shoot the P2 cards and the Panasonic portable 60 GB P2 store would work best due to the fact that the drive would only consume battery power while the p2 card was being dumped to the store. (It would probably take quite a few batteries to run a drive continuously for 8 to 10 hours as would be required to keep a Firestore type memory device on line for this long a period.)

I do both of these types of shoots so it seems that I will need both types of memory.
