Cinemek's Hitchcock Storyboard Composer for iPhone

pCam is another iPhone application well worth its price. Well deigned and functioning application that make you more productive are worth that price.

Wow, pCam looks great - and it works with the ipod Touch! I only wonder how practical it is out there in the field. Anybody here use it?

Yes, I've used it quite bit; Here's a list of programs for the iPhone that I use in varying degrees:

Movie Slate $9.99 -- Sounds like kind of a novelty but it's been by far the most useful app I've found in practice. Great for logging shots on multiple projects. You can mark the video and/or audio quality, start/end times, notes on content, shot type, camera movement, voice/camera annotations; in most cases just by using finger clicks. Plus, you can email the shot logs in a variety of formats.

Helios $29.99 -- Sun position and shadow calculator. Pretty pricey but great for planning out exactly where the sun will be at a given hour/date and how it will affect shadows. Nice with a 3GS because the display will rotate and orient to the direction you're facing.

Artemis $29.99 -- Directors viewfinder replacement. From the same makers of Helios. Again, pretty pricey for an iPhone app but it's a fraction of the cost of even low budget viewfinders. I've found it to be helpful when developing shotlists and estimating the focal lengths to use on different camera types. Will love it when they add user-configurable FoV and support for 35mm adapters.

pCAM $39.00 -- Collection of various useful utilities (DoF, FoV and many others)

Hitchcock $19.99 -- Very handy for throwing together quick storyboard ideas in the field or as a pre-viz tool to develop shot lists...

Screenplay $7.99 -- Nice little app for working on scripts when your computer is not handy

Manuscript $7.99 -- Same makers of Screenplay. Nice writing application for throwing together outlines, doing script research, etc.

Anyone else using others not mentioned?

Cheers,

Checked out the link for the Cimemak Storyboard app and just bought it. Then did a mock storyboard from photos in my library. Easy to use, fun and practical. I think my clients will get a kick out of it (so good for the dog and pony show). I did a shoot last week this would have helped the crew get a better overall idea of what we were shooting for. Love that you can hit play and watch your storyboard move (including dolly moves). Thanks Jonathan, great app.

Very cool. Sometimes you need just a little more to connect the dots. I'm glad it's helping you get your ideas across.

I ended up buying an iphone instead of a touch just to use Storyboard Composer.
I would have gladly purchased the touch instead if it had a camera.

Whoa! That's dedication, whew! Yeah, I'm waiting impatiently for the Touch to get a camera. I figure it's inevitable. I like the idea of the iPhone, but just can't justify laying out a bunch of cash for AT&T. Of course, perhaps you bought the iPhone without the contract - I have friends from Europe who've done that... that's certainly a valid way to go.

Yo Jonathon,

Just got the app and I'm loving it but like everyone else I'm desperate for the export feature. I've been diggin around and you've been saying it's gonna be "ready soon" since October?!? I hope everything is alright. Are you having coding troubles? I'm sure people on this board could help out. Do you need testers? I'd pay to test out the new update.

Your last post here was about a month ago and you said you were close, so what's the deal? Will it be ready this month? Next month? God how I wish you had a developer's blog.

Anyway just wanted to tell you Storyboard Composer is truly inspirational to me. I find that thanks to this product my ideas flow more easily and I'm being more creative with my projects. Without a doubt, this technology makes me a better artist and that's something I don't say about many products. And considering only a couple years ago I had to buy desktop storyboarding software with less features for $800, you've truly made a game changer. But you gotta tell us whats up man. Even if the news is bad. We'll support you either way. Please, keep us informed and great job on a brilliant product.

PS. How bout that iPad? Thoughts? Hitchcock would kill on that device (especially if those rumors of a front facing camera are true).

and some of their comments can be interupted to mean that they will do export only using the video functions found in the iPhone 3Gs, but not the other models. very unclear.

I went to an Austin Final Cuts Pro meeting last night and Jonathan gave us a demo of what Hitchcock can do. Pretty much what the tutorials on the website will show you. But the big news is that they're coming out with a desktop application...mac and pc compatible. whoo hah!

Well that's awesome that you've got confirmation from the cinmek's guys about a desktop application. Last I read, that was an idea they were toying with. And a desktop app certainly explains why they have been long overdue with this update - it was promised as far back as October!!

The question now is when will this release happen? Did they say anything about that? I don't mind paying for the desktop app - I mentioned last post I paid 800 before (hopefully it won't be that much). But I do want to know when. Jonathon is very coy about this info for some reason -only saying it's "weeks out" every couple weeks of so.

I realize they are new to software development so these things take time but if they would just give us their estimated timeline for release or perhaps a timeline for an expected announcement I would be fine. Obviously they don't have to do this but it's not like they are Apple or something, having to be profoundly secretive about their products. Checking the websites messegeboard revels next to nothing - it hasn't been replied to in months. And their twitter account is rarely replied to as well, except for the occasional vague tweet.

But I don't want to sound mad. I'll say it one more time. I love this product and think these guys seems like nice poeple. But I wish they'd do a better job communicating to their customers what they are expecting to release, however small a community that is. I want this company and product to thrive. Here's hoping.
