Cinemek's Hitchcock Storyboard Composer for iPhone

i just used hitchcock on a feature. we had no boards or shot list going into it. we didn't have a chance to scout the location prior to the shoot, plus the director likes to work organic. so every morning we did a walk thru of our day creating the shot list and boards on the fly. hitchcock was awesome. it really helped us visualize our shots and even helped talent understand their blocking. my only gripe, not with the app but with the iphone itself, is that when using it as a tool on set and always referring to it throughout the day, the battery dies quick. had to keep a charger handy at all times.

This application is really amazing. Any news on updates with the requested additions?

Thank you! The updates are still in the forging process. It looks like we will do an upload to Apple by the end of month then the usual 2 week approval process will begin. So hopefully mid November. We are also working on the desktop version which will hopefully be out by the first of the year. Hands are quite full with G35 work as well as we have some customers to attend to.

Cheez,
That is great to hear! I've been doing just that with all of my shooting gigs. I am no longer beholden to the Director and lack of storyboards. Just walk through the shots while we are blocking it out. Eye lines are also no longer an argument. It becomes obvious when we cross them. Glad it's working out for you!

I'm boycotting the iPhone on account of AT&T sucking balls in the area I'm living in, so I'm waiting for the ipod Touch to get a camera; the last update almost had it apparently, before they pulled it at the last minute. Assuming the next iteration of the Touch gets a camera, do you think this app would work just as well as on the iPhone, or...?

The app works great on the iTouch. Even the current Touch. You need to obviously import images from another camera. I think the camera touch will open many options for people who are in your camp.

It would be nice to have a face on the characters so you see if it is a front or back view if the character

good idea. we will be introducing a larger set of PNG's with the dot release (coming soon). This will allow for that sort of distinction. We are really excited about the pro version which is in the works currently. Lots of fun things will be introduced with that.

Android, please!! :)

With incredible phones like these:

. . . I think Hitchcock deserves a port to the Android platform (which is growing exponentially)!
We are seriously looking into it. It is a completely ground up re-build, which does not completely discourage us, its just difficult as we have just paid off our developers for the iphone version. :/

Crossing my fingers for the Android version as well! I know a lot of people who planned to get a ipod touch with camera to be able to use hitchcock and we all know how that turned out...

I just bought this yesterday, It's actually a pretty valuable tool in many ways. ESPECIALLY if you aren't the worlds best artist!

The amount of info you can cram into the tiny iphone lets you pitch your story in the subway or on a plane where you may not have all of your storyboards. Plus you can record audio and animate the camera movements and evaluate the timing of camera moves. All in all I am very very pleased.

I am very much hoping they will come out with an upgrade that allows video clips to be placed in the storyboard.

$20 is steep for an app, In my mind, I already bought the PRO version, so now I will be forced to upgrade to get the added bug fixes and new features? What happened to developers supporting and improving their apps and current customers for free? At least microsoft waits a year before offering the new 'version' with big fixes and much needed features....

You are right... except for one thing - this is a niche market. If you have software which millions buy - like most microsoft apps - you can afford to have very thin margins (actually microsoft has huge margins :)) and sell the stuff cheap, because the numbers will add up. When you have a very niche market, with few potential buyers, comparatively speaking, you gotta sell it for more - otherwise you're putting in hours and development which amount to getting paid way, way, way less than minimum wage. Many developers subsidize their software - by having a regular job. But that slows down development - and sometimes quality suffers. As always, pick two: good, fast, cheap.

If the app is worth it - as I believe this one is - then I don't begrudge the devs the $. In fact, rather the opposite - I feel uneasy if there's a great app that's supercheap - or free... this can mean that at any moment development might stop... after all, a man must eat :)

John,
I hear what you are saying. We have no plans to force anyone to upgrade to get bug fixes or cool new features. The current version is not an old unsupported version by any means. Look at it like iMovie vs Final Cut pro. Without saying too much as things are in flux a bit, we plan to customize multiple versions to fit the needs of certain users. For instance, some people have no need to import custom PNG or to share their .SBC files with each other. These are expensive features to add, so we will offer a premium version for users who want that. If you want to upgrade to that, great. We then plan to offer a reduced version with basic features so people can get into it at a lower "risk". We are also open to suggestions.

This is a relatively niche market and we want to offer the best tool for the price.

Thanks,
