OTHER: Cinematography Reel

Some really beautiful stuff Ryan! Love those flares and the vibes. Your obviously a filmmaker with a unique voice and theme you like to work within.

If you wanted critique;

1. Id suggest a different opening shot, I like the push in on a single subject but the white walls behind the subject make it not as strong as many of your other shots.

2. If you have any additional wider shots or shots with directional camera movement (i.e. shots from cars or bikes or dollies, whatever) That might help break up some of the character two shot/ots stuff and provide some breath in between there when needed*

*Edit: Or just linger a beat longer on some of the wider or movement shots you do have

Just my 2cents, looks great as a whole- I should stop critiquing, work on updating my own reel and make an ambitious feature film like you did ; )

Very nice overall! A few random points - when looking at DP reels, I always switch off the sound, as I find it distracting, but not everyone does that, and for those who don't, the music you picked is too strong/intrusive/in your face IMHO - you don't want to set off hostility or irritation in the viewer that has nothing to do with the visual (you can never anticipate what kind of music people will hate, so it's best to have it be pretty neutral). I'd start with a big daylight exterior landscape type thing, then bring in actors to show off how you handle skin tones in direct sunlight etc., then go to interiors with various light sources, then night ext and int. etc.; one thing I was kinda missing was more group scenes with several actors moving about, because that's where young DPs often fall apart, since when you start out you concentrate on small spaces and one-two actors and you need to show you can handle groups of people who are moving about - follow from room to room with lamps and windows and so on. But overall, very nice!

Great feedback guys, thanks! All very good points.

Hunter, Definitely agree about the not enough movement/breathing room, too many ots's. Can see that now.
ps. If you thought Hills Green was ambitious, wait till you see my next feature!

OldCorpse, That is a valid point about the music, normally I obsess for a week or two trying to find the right song haha. Though, I have to say, I'm usually not afraid to irritate people with a music choice. I should probably work on that.
You're absolutely right about not having enough group scenes. Unfortunately, most jobs I get are small character studies where most of the shooting is two person conversations.

Thanks again guys!
