FS7: Cinema lens advice for FS7 film shoot

I'll give Donny the benefit of doubt that he mistyped, but I'm ready with the physics:-)

A 24 mm lens on an S35 sensor has a certain FOV (about 50 degrees)

Doesn't matter the size of the image circle projected by the lens.

(as long as it covers the sensor)

S35, Ful Frame, or even a 645 medium format camera.

The other question would also be whether it would be better to get E mount lenses over EF with a Metabones adapter, which I currently have. Would it make any difference?

Ideally you want Emount as every converters adds some slop.

Especialy as a rental. Buying Emount - maybe not such a good plan!

Abadon.

You don't really seem to be considering classic still lenses. As I said before.. they are great until the going gets really specialised.

And of course way way cheaper.

I think classic stills lenses got lost somewhere in the internet.. yo all the bloggers are sent the latest and greatest all the time and write about that.. forgetting that an FD or a nikkor is $150 and excellent. But there is no click bait in bigging up cheap old glass. No backhanders for manufacturers.

The main issue I have with using still lenses is with rack focusing and breathing. I like the smoothness and look of cinema lenses when pulling focus. Plus, I'd have to attach more components to use a follow focus.

A 50mm full frame lens and a 50mm super 35 lens will both look identical on a super 35 camera.

Did I say that they wouldn't ..? but what about a FF..50mm lens on a super 35mm sensor.. there will be a crop factor 1.5.. Im not talking about 2 separate lenses ...the FoV will be about 75mm.. no ?...

If the op is very familiar with focal lengths on s35 APS-C sensor sized lenses.. and their FoV.. eg a 50mm prime.. if he/she then puts on a FF 50 mm prime lens on an APS-C sensor size camera .. it will have the "equivalent " FoV of a 75mmm s35mm (APS-C) lens.. yes I know they are both 50mm lenses .. but the sensor is smaller ,so the image is cropped 1.5..and the FoV is then narrower .. is this not correct ..?

Not correct.

Any 50mm on S35 will have the equivilient of a 75mm lens on a full frame camera.

If you come from S35 shooting 50 is a very mild telephoto, and that is true if it is a nikkor 50 or a cooke 50 or a hasselblad 50. (FF, S35, 645)

But a 50mm lenses designed for FF.. will have a crop factor when used on a smaller sensor eg (S35mm APS-C).. and therefore a narrower FoV.. you are saying thats wrong..? I think we are confusing APS_C (s35mm) with FF.. for people from film/video s35mm is APS-C.. ie the sensor size of nearly all video camera,s .. similar to that of a s35mm film camera.. ? your saying there is no such thing as crop factor on equivalent FoV.. I don't think you are understanding what Im saying .. ?

A 50mm lens designed for full frame will have a crop factor when used on a super-35 (APS-C) sensor. That is correct. However, a 50mm lens designed for a super-35 (APS-C) sensor will look exactly the same as the full frame lens when used on a super-35 (APS-C) sensor.

Both lenses will have the same crop factor when used on a super-35 (APS-C) camera.

No, it's not. Lenses don't have crop factors, sensors/film frames do.

Crop factor is simply the ratio of a camera sensor's size to a 135 format (35mm) film frame. That's it.

Yep. 100% wrong. It's the sensor that has the crop factor. HTH.

OMG is that really your point.. yes I know that.. everyone knows that.. but the end effect is a narrower FoV.. you agree to that ?.. so you can say the 50mm FF on a smaller sensor .. in this case APS-C .. with have an "equivalent " FoV" of a 75mm.. .. I mean really thats what got you all fired up.. holidays must be fun .. :)

Yes I never said anything else except the first line.. please re read my post.. A ff lens on an APS-C will crop .. giving a narrower FoV.. thats all I said .. in reference to Sigma Prime lenses that are FF.. re the OP,s question about lenses.. not sure why this caused such a fuss.. ? is this national pedantic day out something ..

Not busting your b@!!s, Donny, but I’m just not quite sure how this mis-information still perpetuates today as many times as it’s been covered on here and and other forums/threads. A “Full Frame” lens and a “s35” lens of the same focal length will not create different fields of view on a s35 sensor, unless a speed booster type adapter is used on the “FF” lens.

Sorry you dont seem to have understood what I was saying.. I probably didnt write it well.. but yes a 50 mm FF lens on a s35mm (APS-C) sensor will have the "equivalent " FoV of a 75mm S35mm lens .. 1.5 crop.. in reference to the Sigma Primes that are all FF lenses.. on the OP,s camera ..

Soooo.... which lenses would you guys recommend? lol

best thing I guess is go to a rental house and shoot some tests ..and see how they feel to you.. also depends if you have a focus puller.. or doing that yourself in regard to the focus travel degree l of the lens .. something like 300.. will be quite awkward even with a FF wheel .. IMHO..

I think the term “crop factor” needs to go away(but I know it’s not). I understand it’s purpose: to help people transitioning from one format(sensor size) to another to easily convert to something they can relate to in their head, but it seems to do more harm than good(creates confusion and misunderstanding). The way that most people talk about “crop factor” it makes it seem like someone is magically losing something putting a “FF” lens on a s35 sensor vs. a s35 lens on a s35 sensor. Any given focal length will have a given FoV on a given sensor size, period.
