CineForm

I'm nearly at my wits end over here. after finally fixing my audio problem with that workaround, now every time I render or export from PP2.0 using cineform, it's garbled as all heck. The frame is usually entirely green or some chopped up bits of my footage are interspersed in the mess. I really don't get why my experience with cineform has been buggy enough to have my whole project dead in the water in post.

Well that clearly is not normal, likely something isn't installed either a CineForm component or a Windows/DirectX component. File a new ticket at www.cineform.com/support (send sample frames of your problem as I never heard of this), but also just un-install then re-install Aspect HD 4.2.4 which is a fast and easy thing to try.

I have a few newbie questions. Which settings should I export my film to BEFORE I go to SD? I checked out the FAQ on the Cineform site re: exporting my film so I can get it onto a DVD. But I was curious, for a 720oN project, if I wanted a true HD master available on my hard drive, for when HD-DVD comes available for my budget, which setting do I choose?

Do I pick Cineform HD Export and say my settings are:

- frame size is 960x720
- frame rate is 25
- pixel aspect ratio is HD Anamorphic 1080 (for some reason, this is the only option that says my 960x720 is 16:9)
- and (i"m PAL), Upper Field for Fields?

Instead of just making a SD render of my footage at 720x576, I'd just want to make a true original quality footage render beforehand, as a back up for later.

I always shoot in 720pN, using Aspect HD for Pemiere Pro 2.0. When choosing my settings, I can only select 1280x720 25p eventhough the footage shows up as 960/720 in the project, so I'm a bit confused as to which fram size one should choose too.

Thanks in advance.

You want to use 1280x720 for all your 720p HD masters, that is the 720p standard. The fact that Panasonic HVX200 only shoots 960x720 is confusing, but you do not want to master that way (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD don't support 960x720.) We typically recommend you upconvert all your 960x720 material before editing, as it gains you some post freedoms and editing speed, but you don't have to do that. So set your export to 1280x720 25p 1:1 (square pixel 16x9).

Cheers David! Thanks so much for the fast replies, really appreciate the support.

When you say "1:1 (square pixel 16x9)", I'm a little confused which option I should choose from my own drop down menu. Here's a screengrab.

I don't have 1.1. option. I think I should go with D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:8 (1.422) ?

But:

But if I select Square Picels, behind the Frame Size, it shows up as 16:9 again, but don't I lose the 'anamorphic' quality then? So that it won't show fuzzy/jittery in the moving shots when watched on 16:9 televisions? Sorry if these are rather silly questions, but I'm a little baffled by all the many options.

And okay, final question sorry. but my field orders, for PAL, should they be Upper Field always? I figured since I'm shooting 720 pN, it should stay progressive? But the Cinemform FAQ says I should select Upper Field. or is that JUST when you export a 720x576 SD DVD render and NOT when you want to have a HD master on the harddrive, which in case then, should be No Fields (progressive scan) field order?

You don't want anamorphic (it have nothing to do with quality), that is basically for SD DVDs only.

Square Pixel (1.0) is the same as 1:1. The numbers in the () are ratios to 1. As 720p is always progressive you want to select no fields.

1280x720
Square Pixels (1.0)
No Fields (Progressive)

Just wondering if Cineform will work with high end compositing programs like Nuke or Eyeon Digital Fusion?

Thanks

We have a support question into Eyeon at the moment as to how to make their Quicktime interface support more than 8-bit, once we work that out Digtial Fusion will be supported. If Nuke supported 10bit+ Quicktime then it will work with CineForm's new Quicktime components.

Hi David. I own an HVX and use AspectHD. However, a friend has an HD100 and is considering buying Aspect for his use. What would the capture and audio settings need to be for him to try it out? He records HDV 720 24p.

All the JVC cameras are supported. Select the Aspect HD 1280x720p24 preset that press F5 to bring up the capture window, hook up the HD100 and you are ready to do. You can also use the HDlink tool for capturing and converting all types of HDV footage.

david,
i'm having a strange problem, well, strange to me: I'm exporting in QT, I have a 2 mins project and i end having a frame rate of 22,6 from a 25fps timeline, if i export just a small portion of the same project with the same settings i have a correct frame rate of 25 fps. Is it normal?
And also, i must streaming compress for the web but Squeeze 4.2 is not accepting my cfhd masters. Which compressor works with cineform?
Best

Which QuickTime compressor are you using? If it is the beta CFHD codec within Prospect HD, then it is something we can address, otherwise the QT engine is all Premiere.

The issues with Squeeze 4.2 have been fixed in version 4.5, which is now CineForm compatiable.

Installed V2.28 but Quiktime with cf compressor is not compiling move
edit: i didnt notice i have to select quicktime cineform and not only the compressor. Rendering now.

That why QT is beta. :) But that doesn't sound like what other are experiencing, as many are now use the CineForm QT export for 10-bit data with Combustion. The missing libmmd.dll, can be copied from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0\Plug-ins\en_US\CineForm to your system32 directory. For beta feedback please use support@cineform.com or email me (my first initial and last name @ cineform.com) i.e. not posting here.

But you haven't stated what you are trying to do, as your testing with h264 and animation are at the opposite ends of the distribution spectrum. What are you exporting QT for so I can advise better?
