CineForm

Hi David,
Re: Prospect HD
I'm thinking, seriously thinking, to buy PHD, limiting, for now, the purchase at the edit version.

1- I'm shooting 720 25pn and 1080i. Can i place everything in a 1920 x 1080 timeline and....
2- I have to consign HDCAM or D5. What output format can i bring to the service on an hard disk to print an hdcam or D5?
3- Can you assume how will it be the resulting HD?
4- I'm using an Athlon 64 x2 4800+ on a MB A8N-E and an ASUS EN7800gtx, problems?

If you do purchase Prospect HD Edit, you can always upgrade to Ingest later. Although when using HVX will probably only need the Edit verison.

1) Both 720 and 1080 can be upres'd to 1920x1080 during the conversion process, so they can be mixed on a 1920x1080 timeline. Even without up-scaling the source data you can mix multiple resolutions in real-time.

2) If you get a Xena HS or LH/e you can rent the deck for a day to do you mastering yourself (possibly easier and cheaper using a service.) For digital file based delivery for D5 / HDCAM mastering, that will depend on the outfit. Most take uncompressed MOV or AVI for this purpose. A few will even take CineForm files now.

3) We have mastered to D5 in 10bit, DPX files, and QBit servers, then out to 35mm print. Quality is not an issue.

4) You PC will be an excellent Prospect HD Edit system. Note: we haven't tested Athlon 64 x2 4800+ as an ingest station. It not likely be fast enough for the most demanding capture modes. It will fine for 720p25 10-bit.

David:

Happy PHD owner here.

I heartell that Intell is making a big announcement about new duo core laptop chips.

I'm wondering if they will also be announcing the new PC duo core chips that, I'm told, are pretty danged kick-ass.

Have you heard anything about this that you can tell us?

Thanks~

Thank you for the prompt reply.
1 - Its not clear to me how i can output an uncompressed 10 bit avi from a
cineform avi.
2- Blowing the hvx 720 to 1080 10bit how noticeable it will be the degradation?
2 - How sensible is the workload difference for the pc in processing 8bit and 10 bit?
3 - Re ingest: i'm cutting movie trailers and I want to avoid the service from now on. So, I will ingest D5 or digibeta and output the finalcut in D5 or digibeta. Do you think i will have problems with my pc configurations (I mean, is D5 one of the most demanding capture mode)?

BTW i'm testing now aspect hd and, let me say, it's another story from my previous solution (sorry Marcus but I had to say that).

1. From Premiere Pro itself you can export to a v210 for an compressed 10-bit AVI. Use export movie and select Uncompressed Microsoft AVI. OR Bring in a CineForm AVI into AE you can master to blackmagic 10-bit MOV (the QT version of v210) or DPX/CIN files, or OpenEXR or whatever you need. It is very easy.

2. No degradation. However up-scale will not add detail. You will need to apply sharpen filter in some cases to make the 720p in 1080 less soft. However you are unlikely to have an issue with the HVX as the 1080 modes don't have that much more details than the 720p modes. In my last short film there are 720p elements in the 1080p production most of the time your can't tell (see here www.cineform.com/48hour -- download the 1080p version.)

3. I think you will have issues with 1080p 10-bit modes, 8-bit will likely be fine. Prospect HD Ingest was designed to run on two Opterons, not one Althon. The dual core helps, but it lacks the memory speed of a dual Opteron.

1 - My question about the uncompressed avi was not related to the premiere how to, but mainly to my lack of knowledge about compression.
With Raylight I was printing an uncompressed AVI that was coming from the original MXF (I assume). To me sounds like Cineform is exporting an uncompressed from the compressed Cineform avi. Is not that a degradation passage? I'm only asking, sorry if the question may sound stupid.

2 - I want to run PHD both on desktop and laptop. What is the most affordable solution?

Thank you for the athlon /opteron comparation.

1 - Technically you are correct, in that the data is only visually the same not mathematically, but in 99% of practical workflows you you don't want to use the source data for many reasons covered in this thread. Some of the obvious ones, you want to up-res, color correct, and titles, anything other than cuts only, using an intermediate help maintain (and improve) the quality of the output. The CineForm is the master format. This is a proven workflow out to 35mm. We are like converting to uncompressed, only more convient and much faster.

2) you can purchase one license and move that license between the two PCs, although you can run both at the same time (on a single license.)

Thanks David ! I am looking a getting a new system. With the ability to run two OS on the Mac platform I think were in for a real treat as we have a lot of manoeuvring regarding what software we can use. I've just read some users are already running Vegas on their Macs; should I decide to move editing platform in the future I reckon I can have the best of both worlds.
Cheers !!!

Hi David ! Sorry if this question has been answered but I checked and did not come across it. I am not an editor so please excuse my lack of knowledge but I was just wondering if Connect HD removes the extra frames/pulldown when working in say 720 25p. Or does the Vegas prog do this; I have just bought DV Rack and HDV Rack and hope to use it with the HVX when it is finalized. As you cannot stream PN via firewire I was just wondering if I can safely record in 720 25 p and use it with Vegas 6 without worrying about removal ?

Just changed the Nvidia settings as suggested and both monitor and timeline goes black when i press play.
Restored default settings and the strange thing is stil lthere

My accidental fault.
MAnipulating the nvidia settings the screen settings went on clone instead of dual view and created the problem. But even following the cineform ssettings for nvidia the image, when playback starts , brightens and soften noticeably.
