CineForm

You get a trail extension in a day or two. Aspect HD 4.2 will be released with an extended trail for all. If any bugs remain we will be doing 4.2.1 soon after :)

Download the new version from www.cineform.com

New version includes :
• New scaling algorithms, particularly for enhanced interlace SD exports. DVD exports from HD projects have never looked better.
• Desktop and Overlay controls now work as they should. Desktop mode corrects NVidia level shift issues (ATI works best with overlay on.)
• HDLink now supports conversion of common media types (now most files that play with Media Player can be converted with HDLink.) Your good old DV, WMV or any miscellaneous AVI (some MOV) files can now be batch converted into CineForm Intermediate.
• HDLink now supports resizing of all sources to standard HD sizes. Previously you could up-convert SD, or any non-standard image size.
• HDLink now supports resizing of HD to SD great for fast DVD masters from your completed HD projects. Includes 16x9, letterbox and center cropped NTSC and PAL outputs. (new since beta)
• Added aspect ratio control for CineForm SD media (rendering to 16x9 SD now imports as 16x9)
• Enhanced compression quality even further (across all encoding modes.)
• Added 23.976 to 25p conversion within the HDV capture controls for PPro.
• Added de-interlacing and resizing options to Premiere Pro's HDV capture (to match the controls in HDLink.)
• HDLink fix for long file batch M2T to AVI conversions
• Fixed audio corruption that can occur with an interruption of Premiere’s audio conform
• Many many other small fixes and refinements

If you've tried Aspect HD before but your time ran out, download the new trial for a bonus 15 days.

This has been a long time in the system, although some features like the scaling engine within HDLink were developed very quickly thanks to Tim, our newest engineering addition.

I just installed 4.2, and I'm having a couple issues-

I started two projects with 4.13 (and continued with the 4.2 beta). After one of them crashed, they both would immediately crash upon opening. Since installing the 4.2 trial, I have been able to continue by creating a new project and importing the original projects. Not that big a deal since this is an easy workaround.

But the big deal is this- I get an error when I try to convert footage (720PN, the only footage I've ever converted), using the same method that has always worked for me:

I'm probably doing something wrong again. One little checkbox needs to be ticked on or off...

Easy fix -- and a reminder to me to make a small change to the installer so it doesn't happen to others.

Open the folder C:\program Files\Common Files\CineForm and look for CFVideoChange.ax. Double click on the AX file. When if it asked how to use the file "Select the program from a list" and browse to C:\Windows\system32\regsvr32.exe. OK-OK. etc. This will register the component. That error says CFVideoChange.ax is not registered -- an installer glitch.

The download links have now been updated to make sure that component is correctly registered (it was in some upgrade cases, just not in all.)

I'm working on a comparison of the HVX formats- 1080, 720, and 480.
I converted the 1080 clip easily- resizing to 1440x1080. But something happened with the 720 clip- I resized to 1280x720, made sure "Keep Source Aspect Ratio" was checked. Now Premiere is telling me the clip has an "Other aspect ratio: (0.000)", and it displays only black and shows the red render bar. When I conform to square pixels, it looks fine and doesn't need to render. The 1080 clip plays fine in WM, but the 720 clip displays only black.
These two clips were both converted with P2 Viewer open. When I went to try to convert the 720 clip again, an error pops up in the log: "Format not available. (P2 viewer missing?)"
And now when I open P2 Viewer, half of my clips display a red X, and the other half are just black! But everything plays fine in-camera. Sigh.
Which little checkbox will save me now?

Yes I see; the footage is fine but the pixel aspect is being interpreted wrong. Use interpret footage within Premiere as a work-around. We will get a patch out for this one ASAP. Can you are one of the best beta testers.

Boy, Can Scanner is hitting ever speedbump on the street!

It's a relief to know that David is so close at hand with solutions.

I'm learning a lot from 'Scanner's challenges.

David

ANy reason that the last 3-4 seconds of audio would be dropping out on converted clips? The MXF files the audio is fine. It is after conversion that my last batch of converted MXF's dropeed the audio with about 3-4 seconds left in the clip.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Roro20, I haven't seen that. Nothing has changed for audio handling in 4.2, but we'll see if anything comes up. It is also good to file a trouble ticket at cineform.com/support as I may forget to retest a particular item (as this thread is 470+ posts long it is not a good reference.) If you fill a ticket the QA team has a record of it.

I shot a few clips with my hideous 35mm adapter today in DVCPRO 50, 24PA, 4:3. I drag/dropped them with P2 Viewer to copy them to my hard drive. From there, I went to convert them with HDLink, using these settings: M2 lens adapter mode, Resize Video: None, Keep source aspect ratio.
HDLink crashed in the middle of conversion. All the files that did convert, when played in Window Media player, have different aspect ratios- some are super wide, some are super skinny.
I thought about checking Resize Video: NTSC 4:3 Centered, but I had already converted a 720p project using this setting, and while the aspect ratio is fine, the frame size is 720x486, not 480- every preset in Premiere (including the CineForm presets) is 480, there is no 486. So importing 720x486 clips will require rendering, even in a customized CineForm project! Which raises another question- why aren't there the standard SD presets for CineForm? 720x480 at 60i, 30p and 24p? There are 50p and 60p, but for DVCPRO 50 captured through a 35mm adapter, the M2 180 degree option is really nice, but there's no easy way to use it after it's converted because of the wonky aspect ratio glitch, 486 frame size, and no preset...

Could my issues have anything to do with the pulldown? I was using 24PA, should I have used 24P and selected Pulldown Removal (even though it only mentions Sony CineFrame and 1080p24)?
Is there a recommended method of capture/converion for DVCPRO 50?

Thank you David!

The aspect ratio bug has been fixed. 4.2.1 will be posted today.

As for 480 vs 486. 486 is the official NTSC spec. The problem is DCT compression (MPEG and DCT) liked the image to be divisible by 8, so you NTSC picture was truncated 6 scanlines. You can create a 486 preset for Aspect HD and everything will be real-time. We don't have much demand for SD editing so we didn't put in the presets. The 480p60 and 576p50 modes are HDV formats. We intentially did not create the 480 content as that does work correctly with AJAs NTSC modes which are 486 only.

Here's your SD nightmare again... :) I see you have added Resize Video options (namely NTSC 16:9). When converting DVCPRO50 files should this be chosen or should I be choosing "none". I'm assuming leave it at NONE and that the NTSC 16:9 is for down rezzing 720 and 1080 footage.

I appreciate your updates and help!!!

The DVCPRO 50 clips I shot were 4:3, but after conversion with 4.2.1 they all appear 16:9. In Premiere I can select all of them and conform to 0.9 pixel aspect ratio (and then the render bar goes away), but I had all the settings as they should be: M2 lens adapter mode, Resize Video: None, Keep source aspect ratio.

Yes, that is correct. The MXF conversion doesn't present the 4x3 in the "VideoInfoHeader" so it a bug in the DVCPRO-HD decoder, one we have yet to work around. Using intepret footage is fine.

I just got back from a client's house. I do a lot of shooting for him, and he edits. He has the Velocity Q NLE software on his computer (along with Premiere Pro 1.5.1 which he is learning), with dual Xeon 3.0GHz processors, a giant RAID and 2Gb of RAM. We tried to convert some DVCPRO 50 mxf files with 4.2.1, as I did on my computer yesterday with success.
We couldn't get HDLink to work- a couple error messages came up during the process, the first popped up in its own window and said something like "Incorrect Parameter." The second kept coming up in the Log (and this one I wrote down):

"got EC_ERRORABORT notification - 0x80070057"

We tinkered around with all the Prefs settings, but nothing worked.
We were trying to convert files that I had offloaded and burned to DVD on my computer, and also the same files that were offloaded onto his laptop and transferred over his network to his edit computer. Both contained the full P2 file structure.
We tried restarting, reinstalling, but no good.
He has a lot of wonky software on his computer for Velocity Q, do you think that has anything to do with it?
We were able to ingest the mxfs into his Velocity Q program, but he wants to make the move to Premiere...
Thanks David!
