CineForm

Not that I'm complaining, but is there a new version of Prospect in the works?
I love new stuff!

Mike,

Absolutely, all these features and more are in the new Prospect HD. We just don't do a public beta with Prospect. I'll send you link privately if you interested in using the beta. The new version will be finalized any day now.

I shot some clips today (onto a single 4Gb card) that were almost completely black at the beginning (I had a subject walk into a spotlight). After I converted them with 4.2 (straight from the P2 card), I noticed the beginnings of some of them were clipped; the converted shot started later than the shot viewed on the P2 card. Is this a bug, or is there a feature that tries to automatically clip off what it determines as total black? Or something I'm maybe doing wrong with the camera?

Doesn't sound like a Aspect HD bug, but can you send me an MXF file that does that just in case?

Hmmm, it looks like there's only one file that is getting clipped- the others all start with near-pitch blackness. The clip in question is 125Mb. It plays correctly (starting with black) with P2 Viewer and Windows Media Player, but when I convert it, the head gets clipped.
Can I send a file this big to you? Do you need the video mxf only, or is there anything else from the P2 card you need? Maybe I should try the 4.13 trial again. I've got two days left using 4.2 now.

David

Another HDLINK SD question... now that I see in 4.2 you can convert DV clips to Cineform AVI's, do you recommend converting DV clips to Cineform AVI if I will be using them in a Cineform DVCPRO50 project or am I okay just leaving them as DV AVI files? Is there any benefit to converting them?

Thanks.

SD to SD no real value for the conversion less you need the CineForm AVI file compatibility (as you would with DVCPRO-50.) DV-25 AVIs there is no need to mess with.

Works fine here. Make sure you don't have remove "Remove duplicate frames" checked -- as that will see those black frames as redundant and not capture them.

Perfect, it worked! I love it when one little check box fixes everything.
Thanks again David!

Ok, I just started a new project, converted and imported all my footage, and started CCing with the Aspect HD "Color Corrector AHD" effect. Everything was working perfectly until I tried opening up a Reference Monitor window with the YC Waveform function. As soon as I checked "Gang to Program Monitor", it almost immediately crashed, and now I can't open the project (it opens and then immediatly crashes before I can do anything).
So, I made a new project and imported the original project. Now I can nest the original sequence in a new sequence, but I can't open the original sequence to refine any edits or effects.
Any ideas? Does Aspect HD dislike the waveform feature?

Is this using the beta version? If so that is good news, that is why we have people test a beta, so we can remove bugs. Reinstall 4.1.3 and load the original project. Note: this are no known issues with the waveform monitor.

David:

I did test Aspect HD and Prospect HD in a real short feature we have produced this week, and have to tell you that my experience was so great!!!

The super quality and easy way the codec let us see clips in media player* and edit in Premiere pro 2.0, joined to real time features (especially CC) are the best part of it.

* (We where able to show to our client the production as we progress and every body was happy, no complains)

Our work flow this time was: record to P2 cards (1080i 24p), download to Laptop Ext USB HDD, Convert via HD link to 720 24p (very fast), show clips to our client in Windows media player, and edit approved items in Premiere Pro 2.0 in order to finish the movie.

Now we are finishing the movie in order to send to DVFilms for blow up to 35 mm next week. (the movie goes to a fest here in our country, Colombia, next october)

HVX200, DVrack 2.0 (wich also I betatested) and Aspect or Prospect HD and Premiere Pro 2.0 are the best combination.

For me, the cost-benefit relationship are optimal, I will not go to produce again without those tools.

I'll send you a personal mail in order to solve some minor issues.

Thanks

Yours,

Ernesto Diaz

David, will you confirm that my hallucinations are true?

If I shoot in 1080, use Prospect to uprez to the max resolution and edit my movie.

I can then bring it into After Effects and apply optical effects like a luma matte on a duplicated layer and use that matte to darken the darks only, or even simply using Magic Bullet or Knoll Light Factory. If I am using Prospect HD for this, the end quality will be better than if I just edited in DVCPRO HD and didn't use Prospect at all. Right?

This is not only because of the 4;2;2 color space but because Prospect beefs it up to 10 bit color as well and the uprezed video is square pixels. Right? In theory the end result should kick ass on anything we do in DVC PRo HD.

Am I right in believing this? Can you elaborate?

Mike,

You are now an honorary spokesperson for Prospect HD. You hit on the key points, but you can add a codec designed for post and 32-bit floating processing. :)

Now to get the message out there.

Yep, that did it.

C.S.

Glad you found a solution. I just tested a ganged scope with Aspect HD 4.2 and it worked fine -- is it is not an obvious bug. Could you please tell me more details on your project. Which preset did you use? What is the resolution and frame rate of the source material? If you reinstall 4.2, and repeat the steps does the some fault occur? Tell me anything that would make you project usual.

Well, ironically my trial just ended (and if someone were to say, renew it, I would be able to get more information:evil: ), but here's what I know- I was using the CineForm 720p24 preset. All footage was shot at 720PN60 for 24fps playback. I checked the "resize to 1280x720" box. I don't know how much footage there was, but it filled up about 75% of a 4Gb card.
Just before the crash, I had laid down a rough edit in the timeline and was applying the "Color Corrector AHD" effect (realtime CCing is absolutely amazing). I was copy/pasting this effect among many of the clips. I had dragged the Saturation slider all the way to the left to get a black and white look (which reminds me, it didn't want to stay at -99, once I released the mouse, it would snap to -98. Weird.), and I was upping the Contrast to about 60. Around that time I opened the waveform monitor, and as soon as I checked "Gang" and scrubbed the timeline for about a second, it crashed.
I actually wasn't able to try 4.13 again, as my trial had just expired, but I was able to open it after uninstalling 4.2, and installing Connect HD. And now that I think about it, this might not be the solution... I assume 4.13 will work since the original project opened after uninstalling the 4.2 beta, but I can't be sure. Poor me, I was all set to buy Aspect HD but my first HVX shoot just came upon me and required me to buy a second 4Gb card to optimize the workflow (insert shameless plug for Spec-Comm, my Authorized Panasonic Dealer of Choice). Now I must wait til I get paid before I can purchase AHD.
David, I'd be more than happy to continue beta testing 4.2 if you'd like to extend my trial.
