C100: Cine Lense : Rokinon

The rokinons are great for the price. Though I don't know why you would start with the 14mm. I think I've used a 14mm maybe twice in the past year. Not really worth purchasing right away. I would suggest starting with the medium range. You can shoot almost anything on a a 24/50/85. I get the most use out of a 35mm when shooting anything in a wide screen aspect ratio.

Of course, I would recommend just a wide angle zoom than. Something like the tokina 11-16mm or canon and sigma have a number of super wide angle zooms.

The point of primes isn't just to increase your focal range, but to give you creative control within that range. I see you have listed the 18-55mm 5.6. So you're missing some essential lensing for portraiture. Even a 70-200mm 2.8 would get you more mileage than a 14mm prime. Just my two cents.

I think the 14 and the 85 are great deals, although I've never owned the 14mm since I would much rather use the tokina 11-20 zoom at that range. Also, the 14mm has some serious distortion. The 85mm is cheap, sharp, and nobody else has anything comparable at that price range.

I feel it is worth mentioning that the Rokinon lenses are cheaply constructed. They are plastic, the tolerances are sketchy, and a lot of trade offs in quality were made in order to keep them at their price point. The actual glass is great, but don't expect them to hold up like other manufacturers lenses or even the older manual focus lenses.

personally I would recommend the Tokina 11-16/2.8 - as an owner of the 14mm I can tell you at 2.8 it is soooooooft. The Tokina is extremely sharp with minimal distortion.

For me, a UWA prime is only usable if one has 100% control over the location, camera placement, etc... But for real world use an Ultra wide angle zoom is so much more useful, there's always that little tweak you want to make to get something out/in the frame and most of the you can't go back a little and be in the middle of the street or in a river, you get the point. An UWA prime? never for me.

With an ultra wide zoom + any longer (35-50-85) prime I can shoot anything.

If you're shooting on a Canon C100, the new Canon 10-18mm STM is a must have, it's sharp and covers that end beautifully. Or a Tokina 11-16mm. I don't think there's a good Cine UWA zoom option for the C100 unless you rehouse.

So I'd have a normal stills UWA (10-18mm STM) + Samyang Cine primes, the 35 and 85 are beautiful, especially the 35, has some kind of mojo built into the optics.

Wanting to start getting a cine lense kit together. Looking to stat with the 14mm DS. Any thoughts? Is it worth it?

I had a chance to use the 14mm (non-DS version) with my C100 on a short film and I really liked it. There was something about that focal length that was really appealing to me when shooting with it.

The build quality seemed pretty solid, the only thing I didn't like was how big the front element was but I guess that kinda comes with the territory of super wide angle lenses like that.
Actually I think it was more that I couldn't remove the sun shade now that I think of it.

We used it for a POV shot, Here a quick screen grab:

So... I am looking into those other lenses guys, just cheap. I did pick up a Rokinon DS 85mm off eBay cheaply. Was able to go out and test shoot a small bit today. Like for the most part, then I get it into Premiere and (I had never noticed on my other playing around with other lenses before, will have to double check them) breathing (I guess). Damn is that annoying. I am guessing this does NOT happen on like the Canon Cine and up the line. Sort of a pisser for rack focusing unless you are panning at the same time.

PW= breathe

Lots of lenses breathe, cheap ones, expensive ones. Some of the worst offenders are anamorphic lenses, and they cost a fair amount more than the Samyang/Rokinghams.

I love the 14mm. I really like all the Rokinon cine lenses. Obviously they won't hold up to serious glass, but they're great for the money. I shot with them a lot and I really like the image better than almost any of my other lenses.

shot loads of vids with the 14mm, it hates sunlight, cant stick an ND on the front (I know internal ND but stronger is sometimes needed) however have recently got the 16mm cine lens and its a wonderful lens and does the job well, but I agree the sigma 18-35 is one of the best lenses I have used under £1,000
