FS7: Cine EI LUTS and Custom Scene Files

I like the saturated look of A05 most but I also like A01 too. The reds look nicer on those too. Handing off to a client, either of those I'd be happy with.

I thank everyone who has the balls to go on record and give their opinion. Those are the only opinions I'm going to give any credence to once I explain what each of the shots are. Here are two more tests, and then I think I am done. I apologize for not having any faces in these tests, but I've run out of willing friends and family for this sort of thing. Perhaps we can begin a Kickstarter capaign to hire a model. :-)

You know the drill . . .

Please, if you haven't waded in yet, please do so on all three videos. The more votes the better.

Fruit: B06 for me, was going to say B01 but it's a little bit green biased for my liking.

House & Tree: I'm going for C02 as I like how there's a little bit more to see in the shadows whilst still having a pleasing contrast.

Now Doug, I don't think its a question of Balls, but rather who has had the time or inclination to bother. I've got 3 computer monitors at home that I typically look at stuff on as well as a Flanders that I hook up to for critical work so I didn't feel right just giving you the results for one monitor only.
Also I found the test with the Sunmaid confusing because not all of the images was exposed the same , so one part I would like at one setting and another at another. However I do appreciate what you're trying to do (at least as far as I understand it) in trying to find settings that might work in wide variety of typical set-ups.

For the record then on an old Dell 2405 amnd my macbook Pro I had the same choices:
Fruit - B05 and the
House and tree C03. I liked CO2 on the fruit for its saturation but the darks were too down.
Raisins - A05 though I would prefer a cross between A05 & A04

Picture Test 3 (raisin box) :
best: A05, worst: A03 (looks like an excessive knee was applied, could do terrible things to faces)

Picture Test 5 (ext. house):
best: C01, worst: C05 (magenta tint)

Picture Test 4 (fruits):

I have a problem with that one. I think this is the one where I find it hard to separate the varying exposure and depth of field from the LUT. Or since the change in gamma in the LUT's affects the effective sensitivity and resulting exposure, or at least the perception of it, should it be considered as an integral part of the LUT? . B1 would probably be my favorite but there are some artifacts in the flame, the image also feels like its acutance is too high (not sure if this is done in camera or if the lens is sharper stopped down here), also hard to tell if the artifacts in the flame are not due to compression. Therefore B04 is my favorite if I imagine it not underexposed, B05 looks decent too. The least favorite is either B06 (warm tint in black) or B08 (too contrasty).

I think that each scene calls for a slightly different LUT. I guess I probably selected different one for each of them. Choices would probably be completely different if skin tones were part of the test.

Hi Mark, I hope you figure out your problem with Vimeo so can give us your feeback. The Vimeo settings have not been changed and I am able to view the videos without even logging in, so give it another try. Password = LUT

Hey, you can't blame a guy for trying to get a response out of people. :-)
Thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughts. Very much appreciated.

Fruits:
I have a problem here, too. It's either too soft, or the highlights are clipping to hard, or too dark overall...
All in all, I vote for B01, even when the flame looks irritating.

House & Tree:
C02 looks best to me here. it's not to soft, bur doesn't clip to hard either. The front tree is a little on the bright side nevertheless.

Raisin Box:
A04 loks best to me here, as I like it more punchy if product presentation is the goal.

Disclaimer: It's real hard for me to decide this way. I'm in for grading in post most of the time, as this gives me more control.
If I put something like a scene file or LUT on the footage, I need to see levels and overall appearance while exposing and not in post.
So, this test is quite the opposite of what I do...

Also I found the test with the Sunmaid confusing because not all of the images was exposed the same , so one part I would like at one setting and another at another.

I tried to find the exposure sweet spot for each for of the LUTs and Scene Files (that was the purpose of the first exposure tests over the weekend to get the opinions of other people), so yes, the exposure does need to change a little. But with that said, a lot of what you think is exposure change is actually just the different ways the different LUTs and Scene Files look.

House =
Best: C02
Worst: C05 too magenta

Fruit =
Best: B02 or B06 (dial magenta down a touch)
B01 Clean and punchy. a little too much for my taste but I could see using this look for clients who want sharp high contrast punchy video.
Worst: the rest

Raisins =
Best: A05 (for punchy looks) A01 (for LC looks)
Worst: A03

I feel like the sheen of the raisin box makes it wash out at "proper exposure", making it hard to judge, because I prefer the lower exposure image (like everyone else is saying) when the colors look rich but know that it's too dark for other parts of the image.

Can you please be more specific about what you like or don't in the three videos? Please identify the shots by number as FrameFarmMedia has done so nicely.

It worked fine viewing this morning... (and I voted on the Sony community but copying here too)
My votes :
Test #3 (Raisins)
A04 (A05 a close 2nd place)

Test #4 (Fruit)
B05 (B03 2nd place)

Test 5 (House)
C03

The polls are about to close. Either speak now or hold your peace. (Hey, I said hold your peace . . not piece!! Now put that away.)
