Christmas scene

We just finished a Christmas special for our church. The drama was pretty intense for a "Christmas special", but it worked really well. This is the opening scene. My son played the young boy. We had a great time shooting this.

It was the DVX-100A, F5 default, custom MB settings for the color. All natural light.

Hey, how is this encoded? I tried to watch it, but I get something really weird... Sound works, but image is really distorted...

niceeee crane shot. what were you using? definately helped how it was slow-moed.... was it?

wow, i dont think i have anything in my house that adds up to a price of one of those :) lol

nice though.

You've got nice camera moves there and great exposure too, well except when the boy opens the door and it goes over! Some of the B/W shots could've used a little bit more white diffusion and softening. Nice effect though!

Overall, really great visuals!

One nitpick, why did you cross the line after the jib shot? That one really bothered me lol.

looked really good....don't know about the black&white though. granted that's your choice, but when i see a black & white flashback i start thinking the 50's :)

So, you've pointed out my two complaints--crossing the line and blowing out the exposure when the boy runs out.

We crossed the line because the crane shot and the dialogue were shots hours apart. We ran out of time and had to break those up, and we didn't have a scripty to help us with continuity.

Thanks for the comments.

Very nice short. That opening jib shot was top-notch, my friend.

The acting was pretty good throughout. Although there were a few instances toward the end in which it just felt forced and awkward.

I really enjoyed it though.

Thanks for the nice comments.

I used one Senheiser M66. It's a nice boom mic. We strategically placed our sound guy just out of sight to get the best audio. And honestly, it was hard in that big, echoy church. We took some audio from other close up takes and just mixed in. It worked well.

I was really proud of my son. He's done well in comedies before, but never any drama. But, he did well. Our joke is that when people ask him, "How did you cry like that?", he would resond, "My dad was directing. He makes me cry all the time."
