been having a hard time choosing a cam to mess about with and do some micro budget films and stuff with. I have a 2gig original g5. So what cam to buy??? New dvx? too much cash for what it is. 2nd hand dvx? maybe..and go more up to date later (or use that money to buy something up to date now.) New xha1? Don't find it that appealing. The hmc 150? more cash, eats up your hard drive will need a new computer. decisions, want to get something soon, egar to get going as i have no cam rite now, what ya think?

I'd say that you'd get plenty of good use out of a DVX. Check the Marketplace forum here... lots of good deals on used DVX cameras, both A and B.

yeah i thought it might be easier to judge the overall exposure if the image is not distorted like when stretched - Damn referring to my other post about stretch.

Personally If you have the cash I'd go with a HPX 170.....I'm on a HVX-200 now and really wanting that bad boy.

That all said, I just recently finished a feature on a DVX, and I love that little camera.....trust me you won't be disappointed!

Oh, and I'd get one used....we filmed on a used DVX, and no problems...I also rarely hear of major malfunctions on units that have been well taken care of, or have generally low hours.

One other option is the HVX-205a...it's a Japanese import of the HVX-200 and you can find em on E-bay for about $3300, and then buy an E-series 32gb P2 card for about $600....for a little under 4k you can be shooting high def.

205a on E-bay
32gb p2 E-series card at B&H

yeah that hvx is a bad boy, thats the one i'd buy if i could afford it, and i dont get too excited about the XHA1, i think i'll buy a dvx, dv films should still be good for quite a while to come

The XH-A1 isn't a bad camera...I finished a short film a few months ago using that camera along with a Redrock M2 and it looked pretty darned good....personally I'd rather stick with DVX-100 or make the jump to the HPX170/HVX200. I also don't like the HMC150....I'm just not a fan of all these cameras that are out that use the fancy new compression schemes...I like old school DV or DVCPRO.

Check it out, heres the trailer for the film on the XH-A1:

And you can see this thread about the trailer for the film I did on the DVX:

At the end of the day I think theres two important things in a camera:
1. Having good manual controls
2. YOU

Even the first one can be thrown out....get creative, buy within your means, and get to filmin! :)
