chosing and formating External hard drives

Hello
Anyone have ideas on the following hard drive issues :

1) how do you go about Chosing a good external portable harddrive for :
-a mac g4 power book with os x tiger
-NLE is final cut pro 5 ??
Specifics of my project:
the material is mostly standard definition video and some high definition video .

2) ANY Recommendations on formatting the drives . ?
partition size prefrence ?
brand of external drives ?: I have a few seagates .
Any and all suggestions are appreciated .

PS I TRIED TO PULL THIS POST AFTER I SAW IT WAS A SECTRION FOR P2 FILE PROCEEDURE .

I like the GTECH G-RAIDs because they stripe 2 drives together in a RAID 0 array inside the case. Mine has been very good. The drives allow more realtime effects than a standard external firewire and come with both fw800 and fw400 ports. They start at under $350 for the 360GB at videoguys among other places..

A cheaper option is the MyBook by Western Digital. $250 for 500GB (costco.com) and it has USB 2.0 and fw400. I bought the same drive for $100 more last month somewhere else. The only thing is it comes PC formatted and you need to reformat it Mac OS extended - otherwise performance is sluggish.
