Chosing an image size?

Hl guys,

transcoding to prores 422 and want to save some space. For footage that will only stay in the SD world (either DVD or at best digibeta) what would be the minimum size I could get away with? A friend who knows more than me suggested 720 x 405. Any thoughts?

I don't understand this logic. All my SD footage (DV, Digibeta, DVC Pro) are the same file size, if not bigger, than the h.264 compression of the Canon DSLRs.

Best to keep the footage as it is, the DSLR HD footage only resolves 300ish more lines than good SD.

Are you keeping the original files, or are you dumping them as soon as you go prores? If you're keeping the originals you can make the prores offlines as small as you want.
