Choppy video via Firewire 800

Hey guys!
Just recently got my HMC150 and have a question. I am using FCP 6.0.4 and OS 10.5.4. Perian not installed

After transcoding to Prores and capturing the clip on my external hard drive (7200 rpm, 720gb with 220gb free) connected via firewire 800. The resulting video is extremely choppy AKA when I go to play I see the video for about 5 seconds and then it freezes and I only hear the audio for the rest of it. The clip is 4 minutes long.

When I move this clip to my internal harddrive there is no skipping at all and it plays fine. This will not work for the long run though as I plan to have 50+ hours of video.

Should I try another hard drive via firewire or is this normal?

Thanks!

From what you've indicated, your FW800 drive and enclosure is sufficient for pro res.

It would be helpful if you told us what drive and enclosure, and what Mac you are using, and what your captured as pro res, ie 1080 or 720?

How streams are you playing?

more info

Here is more information:
The drive/enclosure is a OWC Mercury Pro Elite with a 7200RPM drive with a 32MB cache.

I am on a Hackintosh (yes I know) built last Sept. with these components:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor
4gb of memory
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit video card

It had been running fine since Sept of 2008 with no issues at all including running Final Cut 6.0.4 and editing since then. This however is the first attempt editing HD video from the HMC150, before I was editing HD video from a Canon HV30.

The clip I'm trying to edit is 1080/60i

It is the only clip open and in the timeline when editing.

I would talk to someone about the kernal your hackintosh is built around. I'm gonna bet the fake OS is not built to be compatable with everything your gonna throw at it. Win7 & Edius would be a safer setup with your PCs specs.

There's nothing wrong with Hackinstoshes but I'd never use one for serious editing they're not the stablest of things and are somewhat limited in the driver department.

What you are experencing is the limitations of the built in drivers.
Can you not just add another internal hard drive?
