Choosing between the kit lens and the Tamron 17-50mm

So, I'm about to buy a 7D in two weeks (cannot wait!) and I'm trying to decide what lens to get with the camera.

I have about £1400 and I've only come up with two options:

Buy the camera with the kit 18-135mm kit lens on it

OR

Buy just the camera body and get the 17-50mm VC Tamron lens, which seems to have excellent reviews.

Also clouding my judgement, is what in about 3 months, I have some money coming in (about £600) with which to buy some new lenses with too. SO I could buy the kit lens and then the Tamron at this later date.

I'm leaning towards getting the Tamron now and then a different nice lenses at the later date (something with a higher focal length), forgetting about the kit lens.

I'll be mainly using the 7D for video, but I do take stills as well.

Any suggestions or helpful comments?

Get the Tamron now. It's a great lens for sure - I think much better than the kit lens.

what do you think of the tamron vs the sigma 17-70 macro os hsm etc? Seems to have gotten good but few reviews.

what about the non-VC version? is VC really important when shooting handheld? I've seen videos where it just looks a bit jittery, like it locks onto a frame and then moves and repeats.

Well, I think the VC is a HUGE advantage. Whenever I accidentally turn it off, I'm quickly reminded by the shake.

I like the lens for video and photos - what is "good" is subjective, but many people are enjoying the lens from this forum. No lens of course is perfect and you can make the decision based on some footage/photos you see.

Tamron 17-50mm
- Spend an extra $500
- Constant aperture of 2.8 on zoom :-)
- Lower Zoom Range

Canon Kit Lens
- You pay $200 for the lens, which can be sold for at least $200 later.
- Higher Zoom Range
- Slower lens with a changing apeture
