Chinese 2K RAW S35 Cinema Camera, 8000 dollars

^ I totally agree. A year ago this was BIG news. Today? Not so much, and especially with the issues dealing abroad and other technical limitations of this cam.

About 20 units are in the wild now. Phil Arntz and Matthew Allard worked with one for a week - they told me "everything about the camera is great apart from very nasty rolling shutter" - worse than 5D.
That's a pity, I was really looking forward to it - must have a hands on, that might be a dealbreaker for me.
Hi Frank, here's a video of unboxing KineRaw 35 shot by one of my friends. Actually the Chinese developer is one of my friends as well. I really thingk it's a pleasure if someday you would like to make a hands on test as well as what you did to BMCC.

Therefore I'm afraid...

dude, you could take it as a rumor but Chinese guys will soon release a KineRaw 35mini, which is still S35, interchangeable mount, but record DNGRaw only. Its price will be very close to BMCC.

What? Where did this come from?

Nice thing about the BMCC is the added ProRes. It's nice having DNGRaw, but it's not always practical. However, S35 would be great in terms of lens selection (depending on the mount of course).

I would be excited to give it a test ride and write an article about it - they just have to send me one for testing.
Maybe you can tell your friend.

best, Frank

Hi Frank, just got feedback from my friend. His demo camera was lend to Matthew Allard. He will try to arrange a test ride after that. Meanwhile you could play with some CineformRAW clips shot by Matthew with KineRAW35. Here's link:

It's stored on a chinese site. For your convenience, I will attach a screen shot indicating the position of download button. Have fun.

That's great - I'm in touch with Matt anyway - I think I was the first one, who got those files too play with a while ago.

Thanks, Frank

The Iron Psyche by Matthew Allard

http://vimeo.com/53786956

The Iron Psyche was shot on the Kinefinity Kineraw camera. This camera records 2k 12bit RAW files to either Cineform or Cinema DNG. kineraw.com/index.asp
The camera used was an engineering sample and not a production model.
It was edited in Adobe Premiere and the sound mix was done in pro tools.
It was very lightly graded, just the odd bit of contrast, saturation and black levels changed. We did this on purpose so people can see what the Kineraw image looks like. We did zero noise reduction or sharpening on any of the footage.
The camera itself does no in camera noise reduction. So what your seeing noise wise is exactly what's coming off the sensor.
This short was filmed over two days in Cronulla, Rockdale and Lewisham, all suburbs in Sydney, Australia.
Lenses used were the Zeiss ZF2's. 21mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4. Additional lenses used were a PL modified 11-16mm f2.8 and a Samyang 24mm f1.4
A full review and article on the Kineraw is coming soon to dslrnewsshooter.com

The footage from Iron Psyche looks quite good. Especially the slow motion scenes (I had not realized this camera does proper slow motion); those scenes actually seem to have a bit more color in them too.

The slow-motion scenes were not shot with the KineRAW - they were shot with a Sony FS700 @ 200FPS.

I think with the price drop from RED, this camera is a bit uninteresting compared to the first time it was announced. 4k for USD4k - 10k. And then came Sony to even make everything else looks dull and uninteresting...

IMO... the 2K bandwagon got here too late. We'll probably see 8K in 2 years time and hopefully by then we will all be shooting 4K in general. 2K always seemed like such a weird halfway move...

and it was dead before it even started. Maybe Jim was right? I had this discussion tonight while playing the original resident evil on my ps3. There was a time that looked amazing, not it is nauseatingly bad. Maybe that is what we are living now with hd.

The dynamic-range of this camera does not look impressive to be honest. Perhaps it can be tuned with firmware?

Yes, either it was really dark in that warehouse or the cameras DR isn't that good. But if you ask me they were not exposing for post. They exposed correctly on the
set. So they could probably underexpose a bit and the bring up the lower midtones later in post, which would give them a stop or 2 more DR.

The Iron Psyche looked nice and was quite an interesting little film. It's on Vimeo, so really hard to judge too much on a 2k raw camera from that. I'm really interested in hearing more about how the camera handles and ergonomics, so look forward to dslrnewshooters review. Cheers
