Chinese 2K RAW S35 Cinema Camera, 8000 dollars

too bad all the postings that were supposedly interesting now have a dot :-(
may I throw in my opinion to the design issue?
To me it doesnt matter how a camera looks but ergonomics are important.

Ill agree here^^, and does the Eclair use Oct-18/19 mount glass?

I don't care if it looks like a hamburger grill with a built in transistor radio, if it can deliver a good clean image with a quality dynamic range I'm interested.

Yep. +10000

I was out all day and part of the night shooting with the KineRAW-S8p (tm) (prototype).

My Brother drove me around and helped pack the lenses and battery pack around. We are using our 4pin XLR battery box we made for use with a Konvas, it holds I think a 12Ah 13.8v gel cell (lead) battery. Even though I think the camera draws some current, we were shooting with the camera on for several hours and I did not see the volt meter drop on the battery box. The 7" monitor was running off a Sony Lithium camcorder battery and it also lasted all day and was on for hours, I would turn the monitor off and leave the camera on to save the little monitor battery. At some point I may make a Y cable so the monitor can run off the camera's battery to reduce weight.

It will take me a while to sift through all the shots we made, it was about 280GB. The camera has a shot review and you can delete shots you don't want to download or copy. Since the playback is in 1280x720p if I had a larger HDMI HD monitor I would plug that in and use the zoom in playback to check focus, but I can get by with the 7" monitor for now for shot review and selection. The shots SMPTE shows and counts during playback, so I note that to match the meta-data time code in the DNG frames to keep track of things, they are making some improvements to the way the saved frames are named and such which should help with keeping track of massive numbers of shots.

I found a used 2048x1536 monitor to connect to my Brother's Quad core computer for playing back 1920x1080 AVI to check for noise and artifacts. We looked at some tests I have processed so far, and also downloaded some samples from the Canon 7D (tm). Since I process the KineRAW-S8p (tm) 2.5K frames full size and then reduce and letter box them to 1920x1080 (it's one operation in my de-Bayer, but within that the processing is mostly done full size then reduced and filtered at the smaller size to clean up the results) the RGB data at 1920x1080 is oversampled, where as the Canon 7D (tm) is not obtained using the sensors resolution above 1920x1080 so is closer to Acam dII (tm) in that there can be no oversample at the Bayer stage. Arri (tm) Alexa used 2880x1620 oversample to get 1920x1080 so can improve the resolution and reduce the de-Bayer artifacts. In the S8p the maximum width is 2592 so its only 288 pixels narrower than Alexa (tm), so shares some of the oversample advantage. Anyway, with the 17mm Schneider f/0.95 lens set to f/5.6 and shooting in daylight the peak detail looking at the uncompressed AVI was a bit crisper maybe than the 7D (tm) shots we downloaded, due probably to being able to sharpen 12bit RAW oversample data in the de-Bayer where as in the Canon they don't want to make the image "too" sharp as that could overload the internal recording bandwidth that is limited to what the compression can handle, with a True RAW camera the bandwidth is constant using no compression, so the subject matter does not impact bandwidth like it does in the Canon compression. Anyway, the S8p results look better in some ways than 35mm film scans that we can do in our Oxberry optical printer turned into a movie film scanner, and are free of dust, scratches, and muck so they don't need dust-busting and manual re-touch like film scans so that alone makes using film less attractive now, not to mention the cost ratio.

So I'll be going over what I have shot so far, that and making more shots will take some more weeks to get done as I have software development and other things to deal with as well...

Thanks for taking time. Look forward to seeing more. :)

Thanks for bringing-up the point for people that are thinking of walking with the camera running, and all the issues associated with that style of film-making.

Its quite normal for camera operators to shoulder mount 35mm cameras and follow the action on foot (usually with wide lenses). Look at Academy Award Cinematography winner 'Saving Private Ryan' or nominee 'Children of Men' as recent examples of running-and-gunning with shoulder mounted 35mm cameras. A lot of recent 'shaky-cam' style movies (everything from 'Blackhawk Down' to "Bourne Identity') also use hand held or shoulder mounted 35mm cameras in very volatile and dynamic situations.

Not that I want to derail the thread; its just that the binocular rig would seem to have a very limited static use, whereas the tried and tested optical viewfinder (or EVF) was designed such that the operator could use both eyes at the same time for moving with the camera (and could also be used when on a tripod).

Anyway, this has nothing to do with the Chinese 2K Raw camera; back to thread....

And now we return to the subject of this thread.

Footage

hey Dan any new footage?

As far as I know things are moving forward here and there. I sent them some short sample TIF and AVI compressed MPG4v2 1920x1080p of some of the graded shots (made 2.5K oversample and downsized to HD after de-Bayer) I've done so far, I need to re-do some because of some related lens issues.

KineRAW-S8p (tm) First sample fooatge (lens tests) 2592x1104x12bit@24fps

I got permission to show some lens tests on the KineRAW-S8p (tm).

These are also experiments in the de-Bayer settings and tests of various lighting ratios and exposure levels as well as filters, edited together using my freeish DI software. The AVI uploaded to Vimeo was compressed MPEG4v2 in VirtualDub made from 1920x1080 letterboxed BMP frames (The DI has an option to make a numbered frame set in edit order, VirtualDub can read that and make uncompressed or compressed AVI with or without sound). The original footage is 2592x1102x12bit@24fps and has probably more detail than you can see in the compressed 1920x1080 version, and also no banding and maybe less noise in places.

For making a DCP or 35mm print the original graded 48bpp TIF frames would be used and so the look on the movie theater screen would probably be crisper and with less artifacts, and potentially more than the 8bit tone depth you can see off Vimeo.

I got the adapters made for using an anamorphic lens to test the 1828x1556x12bit#24fps mode, and also put a gear on a 5MP 12.5mm f/1.4 Fujinon to use with a follow focus, so there are many more things to test and look at the results of when I can get time to put together some more reels, such as slow motion at 220fps and 48fps (to be skip printed) etc. Here is the link to my first try at de-Bayer of the DNG frames since the last firmware update,

http://vimeo.com/33997025

I have attached some still frames, unfortunately DVXuser would not accept the uncompressed BMP files about 6MB each, so I compressed them JPG 100% which came out about 1MB each, DVXuser upload then re-compressed them down to about 40KB!

So as you can guess 99% of the information when somewhere. If you want to see the original uncompressed frames you can try emailing me at tempnulbox (at) yahoo (dot) com and put "I'm from DVXuser about uncompressed BMP" in the subject line (otherwise you may get deleted as junk mail.

Eee-gads! I just looked at the jpg frames, not only did they get re-compressed but resezed to 1000 wide it seems, losing just about everything that makes them look good in the process, its too bad that on a site dedicated to discussion of things like image quality, one cannot post examples that would make such discussion be able to be on the subject of the actual image quality. Its great that DVXuser is a free site, but I'll have to look into other ways to show results I guess, for now you can email me for the uncompressed frames if you have a interest in seeing what the camera actually can shoot like...

KineRAW-S8p (tm) sample video and still frames from reel #A2

Thanks for the complement, its great to work with True RAW data as you can grade it 1000+ ways AFTER you shoot.

The still above from the 5mm Computar-Ganz lens shows a bit of red CA fringe, right now my CA correction is doing linear corrections, I would need to add warping to work out some non-linear lens artifacts, so that may take some time, but with the DNG files you can always go back and get better results as de-Bayer software improves over time.

The other four images are from a 10mm Schneider which has very good correction, so does not need as much post processing, probably.

The softness in the bright highlights is intentional and not part of the camera's look in particular, I am simulating the image spread from 35mm negative positive printing trying to get a 4th generation movie film character. Film always has lower resolution in the bright and dark areas with its peak in the mid-tones because of the head to foot flip on each negative to positive to negative to positive printing.

I don't see much ringing or chroma moire in the 1920x1080 letter boxed results. I think with careful exposure and processing 2048x858 for DCP projection should be workable from the KineRAW-S8p (tm) based on the tests I have worked through so far. My original interest was for transfer to 35mm color print stock, which would be a lower standard since on projection only about 960 to 1280 resolution (at high MTF) would be seen because of the poor focus of movie film projectors without a projectionist in the booth to re-adjust every few minutes.

Anyway, sorry about the heavy compression losses, but you can get some idea of the dynamic range, unless your LCD monitor is clipping the highlights and shadows, you can check that with the test pattern I made at the start of the video on vimeo...

See the Eee-gads! note above in my previous post, and please do not make judgments about the camera's resolution or my de-Bayer software from the compressed images, if you have a serious interest you can email me and I can maybe try to email back the BMP frames uncompressed so you can see them better...
