Chinese 2K RAW S35 Cinema Camera, 8000 dollars

Good to hear the S16 is working now - hopefully we'll see some footage soon.

And Dan, I appreciate where you are coming from. I'm not really in the same place, but I can imagine that many are. And I have no dislike for PC machines - I didn't intent to get anyone's hackles up about that. It's just that, professionally, I've been living in a Mac world due to software choices. Some of those software choices are changing, and may very well mean I'm building PCs again soon.

From the experience of the Red camera forum discussion, now I prefer much more the traditional approach of announcing the product when it is ready. How many including me have been waiting and speculating for years on these camera. How much have I been reading, posting even dreaming of a camera that I will not be able to afford because in the end it will cost two to three times more than it was announced. How many hours and days of my life, I will not be able to reclaim. Some might say they prefer this approach but after the never to be scarlet s35 experience, I prefer a camera just popping out. Imagine, if this one takes 2 years to come out with many announcement, then delays and further delays, how much time will you loose here.

While this sneak peek / early announcement approach may or may not have this intention, it certainly has this effect. The effect is making the consumer save their money for their eventual product, and disrupting the sales of their competitors.

I think the announcement situation is a grass is always greener situation.

On one hand, imagine going out and buying the Sony F3 along with a few lenses, some media, some batteries, and some other proprietary bits of kit - say about $20,000. And it shoots great, works great, and then...a month later a competitor releases a camera that you would have rather purchased but never even knew existed. Except now you can't return the camera you did buy. If only I had known...

On the other hand, it's a pain to hear a lot about a product - down to pricing, specific features, and release dates - only to have the development process result in changes to every one of those. If only they'd release it....

Of course, from a practical standpoint, the answer is rather obvious. Is the camera you are currently using fulfilling your needs? If so, you're sitting pretty. You can afford to wait to purchase something until it no longer does and save money until then. If not, buy a camera that does - ASAP. ROI it and then, if you need to, invest in the next camera you need.

Can you do us favor? Please tell them to get a vimeo account or open a channel for Kineraw to put samples there at 1920x1080. It is easy do it. In the log run the company and your software will gain more publicity from the indie community. All they should do is upload a 1920x1080 h264 version of the master. A great tutorial is here (http://vimeo.com/help/compression)
Chinese version of youtube just doesn't justify.
thanks

The thumbnails above may be out of order, the steps go:

Step 1 = 1.png, step 2 = 2.png, steps 3 and 4 = 34.png, and step 5 = 5.png.

Hope that helps, they asked me to relay any comments (other than the need for 1080p) about the very early test of the KineRAW-S35 (tm).

You can compare my CC on the overexposed frame above, to the same frame in the video at that site. I could get better results I am sure if the setup was under better lighting and not overexposed and out of focus, I base that on the other test frames I have processed for internal testing of the exposure levels they have sent so far...

Thanks so much for sharing Dan!!! Great to have your coordination and support for members of DVXUser who are interested. You DA MAN!!!! :)

I was talking about what I am doing/offering to do as to making an LUT for use in the Kinefinitty.com (tm) S16 camera development. I did that since there seemed to be interest in what was going on.That was not an anouncement by Kinefinity.com (tm) or an offer for sale. I do not speak for them with regard to their sales other than to pass on what I understand their web site and such means as far as I can tell so that people have an understanding of how I see things as I understand them. There seemed to be a lot of speculation about the cameras and I was just trying to offer some insight as to what I understood was going on since I have been talking to them for years during the development and testing.

As I understood comments from other posters on this forum, they were interested in hearing about progress as I understand it.I would not recomend that people make their purchase decision on any product without seeing it working and having a firm delivery date and a good warranty. If you knew that some major brand was going to release a product on a date maybe 1 month from now, it would not be unresonable to take that into account, such as waiting for an iPhone 5 or 6 or 7 rather than buying one today.

With cameras from RED (tm) and Acam dII (tm) and even ARRI (tm) there has been a Standards of Practice to anounce products far in advance of shipment, why should Kinefinity.com (sm) be treated any differently than the other makers of such cameras?

As for mentioning my "road map" I am not selling anything here and do not recommend anyone wait for anything, rather I was saying that people should adjust their workflow to use what is already on my Web site since I have no idea if or when I will get anything done, that should be clear now? I do listen to what parts of my software interest people and do adjust my task list sometimes to give some tasks higher priority, so even when I can't get something done right now, I do take people's comments into account when thnking about what to work on first.

Dan,

I have to say that I've visited your website and, to be honest, I find it completely incompressible. I can't even try to pound my way through it b/c the bright yellow background hurts my eyes after less than a minute of viewing.

I very much appreciate all the knowledge that you share. But to me your website comes off at best as an eccentric curiosity; at worst as something opaque by design.

Again, not to sound harsh, b/c I do appreciate all that you contribute on here and Reduser.

I dont think its about having a pretty site but just a good layout and friendly to the eyes :)
The yellow is kind of pushing me away to read to it. With that said keep up the good work.

KineRAW S16

KineRAW S16

Contrary to those asking for another brick, I think that the physical design, balance and ergonomics of a camera are very important. I am particularly interested to see what becomes of the KineRAW S16.

There is definately room for a robust, lightweight and compact digital cinema camera for documentary. Years ago Jeff Kreines proposed the Kinetta, a beautifully designed RAW camera that sat on the shoulder and featured an optical viewfinder. The ergonomics that are apparent in the Kinetta prototype are streets ahead of the current crop of digital cinema cameras. I hope the designers aim for a true shoulder-mount camera form like the Kinetta or the JVC GYHD250, rather than a brick that needs a complex and unwieldy rig.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to build ND filters into this type of camera?

Is it necessary to debayer and process the RAW files to review footage? How long should it take to debayer RAW footage (for example 10 minutes of footage using a reasonable laptop)?

With communication being an issue due to language and Chinese internet restrictions, it would make sense for Kinefinity to team up with solid promotion, sales and support teams based in different territories. I hope this is part of the plan as it would be a shame to see the initiative fail due to poor outreach. If Kinefinity can reach the markets, and they spend the time to get the ergonomics and build quality right, I think the KineRAW S16 may be a winner.
