Check out the new HPG20 - The P2 Gear 2

So,

a) I buy 2x p2 card
b) Connect a RED ONE cam via HDSDI to this device and it will record AVC Intra 10 bit footage to the P2 card just like that ? If so... this device will sell a ton.

Does this thing run off V mount or AB batteries or does it have its own battery system ?

Yes it would work that way from the Red. It uses DVX/HVX batteries. On a P2 Gear I think the battery lasted pretty much all day long, so I would expect comparable performance from this unit.

Barry, that is so awesome. I am sure this thing will be selling like hot cakes. I am for sure will get one !! What is the MSRP on it ??

Don't know. The predecessor was $3995 but that didn't have either AVC-Intra or HD-SDI input, so presumably this will cost more...

You should be able to record any HDSDI signal to it. So a RED, an EX1, a HPX170, etc etc. There is no word on clock rates yet though. So it could be limited to 59.94.

None of this information can be verified but it should list for around $5000 and be available Feb. 09.

Interesting that Panasonic has not posted/announced it on their site as yet.

too bad the HPX500 outputs 8 bit hd-sdi - otherwise this would have been a great way to record full 10 bit full raster

Thats true but the signal would still be laid down as 10 bit AVC Intra would it not?

I'm pretty sure that the HPX500 does output at 10-bit signal. DVCPRO HD is 8-bit but the HDSDI output of the camera does not go through the same compression. The firewire output would indeed be 8-bit, but when using the HDSDI you should get all the advantages of 10-bit.

so it doesnt matter that the codec is 10 bit - the info is only 8 - bit - hence my disappointment - cause it would be great to get 10 bit our

Low-cost cameras don't typically have 10-bit; the Canons and Panasonics are 8-bit, I'm not sure about the JVC. The EX1/EX3 have a genuine 10-bit.
