Check out some cool footage and res. comparisons!

But stick with 720p. You DO get 4:2:2 at 720p (or very very close). It is a LOT- and I mean a LOT better than 4:2:0. In 1080p, the picture of the HVX is not as good, tough. The same scene i talked to you about with the girl and the candlelights looked a lot noisier and with less color detail. This is all measured by my eyes, tough. No resolution charts or anything.

I think you may be right. I have had the camera for 3 days and have only tried 1080p.
I am on the road and as soon as I return I need to find the best setting for shoots I have coming up. If 720p is the way to go then I will try it. I have a client wanting to do stock footage and he is pushing for 1080 for compatibility???

V for Vengeance seems like an interesting comic to movie adaptation... you seen it? Any good? (this is getting a bit of topic :) )

No, I haven't seen, I was too busy at my comic teacher's stand.

I'm a very big fan of Wong Kar Wai's work and his DP Mr Doyle's work. It really captures the feel of Hong-Kong. What I saw from the night pictures of the HVX was thie same type of tone and film look I see on HK shot movies. I'm pretty sure this camera will make me achieve great pictures. But stick with 720p. You DO get 4:2:2 at 720p (or very very close).

Where I can find some images of his work? I just found this beautiful cover of one of his movies:

This is very disappointing! 1080p 4:2:0!? I've see various noisy example in 720p here, and I was sure that to have a good picture you must use 1080p....less artifacts...

Very upset about being 8 days from the official European launch date (17 March) and not having any confirmed specs and improvements!

This is very strange and mysterious...

Danillo, Check out these links

Some Chungking Express Links:

As you can see, there's some noise in the picture, but the cinematography is simply brilliant, and the colors... That's very close to what you can achieve in camera with the HVX.

Also, Danillo (since you are into anime/manga). I suggest you REALLY find "Fallen Angels" and Chungking Express, from Wong Kar Wai. You'll love it. "In The Mood for Love", however, is his best movie. its simply brilliant and a work of art.

EDIT- Some more links, now from Fallen Angels and a bigger and better colection of "In The Mood for Love" photos

And, Danillo, what you see in these photos is in fact the texture of his films: Brilliant, isn't it?

SPZ just hyper-beautiful shots!
I really liked them! You're chinese, right? It would be beautiful shot movies with orientals actors in Naples, don't you think?
If I had money to pay them! You don't know how I dream to direct japanese, korean or chinese actors, they are just beautiful!
I really love Tadanobu Asano!:love4: (just platonic!) It would be fantastic direct such beautiful people as orientals!

His acting in Ichi the killer was beautiful! Yesterday I've seen an interview about him, he seems very kind!

Also like an old actor called Ken Yoshizawa, he has acted in Ectasy of Angels by Koji Wakamatsu:

You're very lucky, you can have chinese actors being yourself chinese! LOL!

Hope to see the movies that you have suggest soon!

Very thanks! :)

ORIENTAL CINEMA ROCKS!

Well, I'm not chinese, but a mixture of various races...I don't look much asian, tough. More like middle eastern, strangely enough (since I don't have middle east blood !)

Anyway, try to see those films! They are beautifull! And NOT noise free- noise is not THAT important if you achieve such cinematography, right? :)

The production studio I was in said there isn't much of a problem in the upconversion process from 720p to 1080p. I would assume the picture would look a bit softer, but not much added artifacts. People seem very happy with the HVX's 720p Blowups to film. The common process for this is going to HDCAM sr, which is 1080p, so this shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT- HVX guy, I believe that for stock environment shots the HVX might not be the best camera to get. I believe the HVX is good for Script based productions with lots of Human behavior and interaction. For landscape and scenery footage, maybe the Canon (with its Higher Resolution) would be better. It has a more "realistic" (which means flatter in my book) look at things. Much like video looks worse than film, but it portraits color more "realistically".

Ahhhh, we are going after looks that will blend in better with the script base productions. I remember years ago the only stock footage available was shot on film and we would use these in "video" productions and the clients would comment how much better the stock shots looked than the rest of the video.

Yeah, you're absolutely right... Nowadays, people want poorer looking video (no 24p) with very flat looking images... But hey, its what the market wants, right? Long gone are the days Beta SP stock footage was the alternative to Film stock footage...

I think the demand will be for 24p in the future. As the transition takes place the HD post houses will have to trash the SD stock footage. I own dozens of stock footage collections. I guess I could use them in a multi-layer comp. There is HD stock footage available,
most in 1080p 30fps. Thats fine for scenics but it will slo-mo the people shots. www.thoughtequity.com has been shooting DVCPRO HD for some stuff as well as HDCAM. Very pricey.

HVXguy, have you read my last message? I'm shocked! HAve you seen original Mxf files? Oh my! They're worse than I've imagined, believe me!

I just got my camera last week and have been out of town for
4 days. I have been playing with some other footage. The HVX is a tempermental piece of gear it looks like. Point it at the wrong subject and you get the ukkeess. I remember when I hired a DP and he shot 16mm ASA 400 neg film. I was shocked at the grain. The video looked horrible. I did that soft focus look to save it. I taught myself how to use an Arri SR2 and next time I shot ASA 50 film. Of course I needed tons of light but I didn't care. That video looked fantastic. The next shoots I did on 35MM and I was getting better and better and then demand for high budget corporate films went away. I feel like that all over again. I wish I could dial the noise down. I hope to post some decent footage in short order.

I'm thinking again about Xdcam F-350, but there's one thing that I've not understand, you can use without a deck? How you send the footage from Xdcam to computer? IT's possible without a deck? I've read that Ie1394 resample all in dv! Any ideas?

Hope to see good footage in Mxf files too! Now I can check the real quality of this camera...

HEy! But a my post was cancelled?! I'm talkin' about message with my comics...this sucks! I've posted those drawings for Emanuel!!! Emanuel have you seen them?
Who has deleted my drawings without notices me?!:furious3:

Danilo, I'll go to HK this weekend (hopefully). I hope to be able to test the NTSC camera myself, and not see prerecorded footage (like I did).

Danilo, have you ever worked with a DVX? I have, and I really like its image. That's why I didn't immediately jump for the XL-h1, even with the superior specs. It is true you can make XL footage look good in post. Its also true it records tape, and it has bigger resolution and the sdi outputs. That's why I asked for my office to purchase the XL-h1. But for narrative work, which is poetry and art, you need to feel inspired. I have a very peculiar way of shooting. I make a general plotline, create the characters and basic plot points. Then, I select a location and arrange it in a way that alows me freedom of movement. After that, I let the actors act (with some indications of where I want them to go on their acting) and try to capture the shots I do "feel" the best about. In order to do this, I have to shoot with a camera that gives to me also something back, not just a flat perception of the world. Its just like film... You know how film "romanticizes" the world? That's exactly what I feel when I "film"with the DVX. I believe the HVX (from what I saw at the studio and some of the footage posted) does exactly that.

About the noise issue, I'm a bit concerned about what's going on on the other thread- but, then again, I want to see it with my own eyes this weekend.

Even with all these problems, I'm sticking with the idea of going with the HVX-Pal. I'm just a bit concerned about editing the footage, tough- there's still no 720p50 support in FCP.

As for your comics, I think it deserves its own thread. Create one! I'm sure people would love to see (and no one will probably delete it)

Caro Danilo, I'm travelling by now but yes I saw it. Tu sei tremendo. I liked so much, indeed! But actually I'd like save as to my personal enjoy@PC. So, please, send me to PB box. Grazie tanto.

Thanks Emanuel! I've sent an email to you with my drawings, first and third prize Comicon contest. I've seen also the ford video, I was thinkin' that jvc+mini35, and some new zeiss lens (the newest for nikon slr camera) maybe we could have the right camera.
I'm waitin' also jvc gy-7000 (hope its release soon) or Xdcam f-350 (variable framerates) both without 35mm adaptors. But they are too expensive considering I must buy also an editing station.
What do you think?
If only Redcamera coming out at Nab...but they have said we oughta see only a mock-up...and it's a new company...considering problems buyin' a camera from a new-born company without any warrantee (we've already problems with Panasonic, so figure out!), it's pure sci-fi. And I live in Italy not America as people there!
I was hoping to buy a camera soon to learn something of pratical you know, but how much problems! Considering too that I need ten years to pay one of these cameras + editing station! I must choice the right one, so if I've some lucky I can do some work to recover the cost of all the stuff.
Damn companies! They want just ours money!:crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

Ciao, amico mio! :)
