Cheap tapes

Okay, I got a 10 pack of TDK tapes for $25 at Costco. I was wondering if there was a downside to them. Since it's all digital, I don't understand why it would be lower quality video, other than maybe some dropouts. But what I'm worried about is longevity. Are $2.50 tapes going to last as long as $10 or $20 tapes? And I heard that cheap tapes can do harm to your camera? How's that work?

TDK is a reputable company right?
 
I've always used TDK tapes with my HV20 and before that with my elura 90. I didn't have a single problem. TDK is a very good brand. I've also tried the HDV version of TDK tape. I didn't see any difference in video quality or capture performance.
