i actually ordered the clamp on version of that matte box recently, also has only one flag, i'll do a quick review when i get it too

that last one looks shockingly cheap. The plastic looks like a toy. I think i saw a review of this one on cheesycam. If I am not mistaken it was the only negative review he has ever give.
I also dont really understand the purpose of this without a filter holder. I understand that its to cut lens flare but they make screw on hoods that can do that just fine for pennies on the dollar.

Ordered one a week ago, will update with impressions when it arrives.

I just ordered the 9" DSLR cage from this seller yesterday for 100$ shipped. I was about to post the same link as it looks more like a real matte box, provided you plan to use filter with it. Otherwise, anything simpler that "cuts" the light in front of the lens can do it.
Did one myself for "low-costs":

Looks nice (painted in black) but doesn't have flags yet. It also attach to my little Cavision rod support but can hold by pressure on my Raynox lens. The "mount" is actually a 80mm computer fan plastic case and it works well so far.

Other than this, the last link from kokomart isn't well rated from cheesycam.com. I would invest a little more for something better than that, otherwise I'd do like it did and I'd build one from a Starfrit container and 80mm fan.

Turned up about a week ago, finally got around to throwing it on when I was trying to build a long lens rig.
Overall, surprisingly good build quality. Not up to Genus or Redrock specs but for a cheapy off eBay I'm not going to complain.
I haven't tried the top or side flags yet, they might bash about with movement but then again, it was cheap.

From a monetary stand point I really don't mind buying cheap pieces of gear. A matte box is something that holds filters and blocks light at certain angles. It's not that complex. Having one that costs a tenth of the price of another would offset any potential costs on almost any project. (Not big feature films of course.)

However, I have begun to worry about litter and global impact of all this super flimsy gear that is coming out. A lot of it gets trashed not only because it may be less durable, but because it is less of a financial investment to the owner.

Do you think you could make this matte box last 20 years? Would you even want to try?

Umm, kind of a weird tangent. Do I think this will last me 20 years? No. But I doubt most of the stuff I have I'll still be using in 20 years.
If it's a carbon footprint you're worried about, well the thing is plastic and metal. So theoretically it's recyclable....

When shooting with a 7D, I find people stop and pose because they think I am shooting stills. I think a cheap mattebox can help this problem. I purchased a more expensive mattebox, but found it didn't work with my zoom 17-50, it only really worked with primes. For these reasons, I am in favor of a cheap mattebox sold on ebay that screws into the filter holder.

Blocking aberrant or overhead light is not rocket science, I don't like the arrogance of elitists on this piece. It is always more important to know how to use your equipment than just own expensive stuff.

I fully understand this point, as I experienced the same situation when I shot a wedding recently. People were stopping and waiting for the flash until I'd tell them I was recording in movie mode...
But a cheap matte box, especially with DSLR, MUST have filters holder...unless you don't plan to shoot outside on a bright sunny day!

Haha, I think we've all had that problem before.

Yeah, primes or internal zooms only.
