Can you change tapes while still capturing what is going on (such as a live event where every second counts)? Does it work to capture to a laptop? If a laptop is not practical, is there a semi-cheap way to capture this video (It would never be over 5 minutes)?
It all depends if you're going HD or SD. If you're going SD, you could record to any number of portable devices that record basic 640x480 video. However, if you're recording in HD, your options become limited. You could use a Firestore or a laptop connected through FireWire. To my knowledge, that's about it when it comes to portably recording HD video. (Of course, there are $5000 flash memory recorders, but that's not worth it for 5 minutes of video!). When using the laptop, you could use software like Adobe OnLocation, or Canon's own console software. Furthermore, both these options (firestore and laptop) will work for SD, too.
Ok. Well, I think that using a laptop with software like OnLocation or Canon Console sofware is your best bet. I would stick with 60i if you're doing this--you'll have less to worry about in regards to compatability.
