CF Card Error

Hi All,

Can somebody please help?
I have now a Sandisk extreme 16g card with an error after a full days shoot.
Camera says, CF error, card reader wont even see it on laptop.

Can anybody help me here? What do i do?
We are still on location, we can reshoot another day.
If i choose to reformat card then recover, what's the best way of doing this?

If you're using a Mac, does Disk Utility see it? If so, try verifying and repairing and see if the volume mounts successfully.

I would try a different computer first. If that does not work go to SanDisk and get their RescuePro Deluxe and see what that says about the card.

Also were you shooting on dual card mode? If not I would suggest to always shoot on dual card mode so you have a raid 1 setup going in the camera.

I have only experienced 2 errors while using the C300. One was while trying to shoot 720/60p on a Transcend card which gave me an error and I switched to a Sandisk card.
No problems with 720/60p with the Sandisk Extreme cards. The other time was when I let the camera run to the end of the card. When we copied the files as backup the computer did not see the files.

Fortunately I still had the card and did a second backup and the files were there. Maybe something with the camera having to correct the error with a reboot.
So try Paul's suggestion of a different computer and then try the RescuePro software. Hopefully, Justin's idea or Paul's idea will get you access to the footage.

For goodness sake don't do this. If you want any chance at retrieving the files don't let Disk Utility much about with with the card. Disk Utility is great for verifying & repairing stuff it knows about like a Mac formatted HFS+ disk but it's kust going to screw up your CF card.

In the end we went with a reshoot.

After starting the Sandisk Rescue Pro and it saying it would take 21hrs or so to check the footage i realized i just can't trust a recovery program to do its job and not come back with any codec issues.

I have now learnt that taking the card out while the red light on the door my cause this CF error. I don't know for if this was the case, anyway from now on i will be powering off before removing my cards.

Glad you were able to reshoot. You can never take a card out of any camera I know when the card it being recorded too with out error. You can hot swap the other card if that is not being recorded but don't pull a card otherwise.

The camera wasn't shooting at the time, from memory i turned the camera back on after swapping lens, pulled the card. Red light must have been on when the card was pulled.

i just bought 2 new cards for my new c300. sandisk 32gb 90mb/s and 64gb 60mb/s - the price is kind of same for both cards..... these cards are getting cheaper and cheaper and i see no reasons to invest in it, - so i ll use 32gb card as a main card, and 64gb card will use just for copies...... this way ill fill safe...

I just have a habit of turning off the camera for lens changes and card changes. For me it is just easier than camera repair or a reshoot.
I know a lot of people who scoff at this and hope nothing happens, but it only takes once to cause a major problem on a shoot and possibly lose a client. Just not worth it for me.

Also, unless you shoot event material I use smaller cards so that they can be downloaded and checked halfway through the day.
But, there are a lot of different profiles of users here and what they shoot.
