Hey guys I'm looking into ways to dump CF cards on shoots.. I'm tring to find something that will dump cards w/o having to be plugged in .. I might just scoop up an old mac book from dv wharehouse.. or a netbook.. any ideas??

What's more important to you: speed, capacity, reliability, or cost? You can often have 2 or 3 of the above together, but not all 4.

for cost I'd say around $200 anymore and I'd get an old macbook.. capacity around 30 gb would be nice bigger the better.. reliability would def be a concern..

old device

I knew a photographer who got himself something similar when he went out of the country for an extended stay: link
however that was a few year back, and at the current prices of CF cards, i would buy several 32GB instead.

Edit: you didnt say what you wanted to do with the footage. Would you be editing this right away or just storage?
If you mean to edit, i doubt you would want a netbook for that.

I just need to store the footage.. That does look good... I hadn't thought about the personal media player route.. I'm going to do some research in that direction ill post anything i find...

I bought myself a netbook for the same reasons (Asus eeepc 1000H with 160GB HD) and I am very happy with it. I can even run Adobe Lightroom on it and preview my raw images, I can also use it to remote-control my camera and it is a neat little computer that I can take anywhere. Also the battery lasts forever (6 hours easily if you don't use WLAN).
I am really glad I bought it! :)

The $200 30gb mac is definitely not the way to go. Thats more expensive than even high end compact flash cards.

Your best bet is probably getting a netbook. You'll get the same storage per dollar that you would get with something like a media player and you get a computer on top of that, which may come in handy. A netbook also gives you the option to hook up an external so you can make 2 copies just to be safe.

Also since you mentioned mac previously if you hesitation with a netbook is using windows you can actually install mac os on it.

I spent my money on a Canon ef 15mm lens but i think i'm just going to keep an eye out for an older mac book or a crazy deal on a net book.. I'd much rather spend 200 on a comp then cards... I still don't trust cards that much.. (or myself with them) and you also get a something to go online with and sample videos..

FBAS That net book looks dialed! 6 hours is pretty amazing! If that Sd Reader was a cf reader....

If you're worried about losing your footage definitely stay away from an old mac book. Hard drives die all the time and an old used drive is much more likely to die than a compact flash card. Plus an old mac book will run you about the same as a new netbook, and the netbook will have much better specs.
