Ces 2018

There's some pretty heady stuff happening at CES this year...

The CEO of NVIDIA is giving the keynote speech live tonight, it will be on Youtube later.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/ces-2018.html

He's talking about NVIDIA's role in the $100 Billion gaming industry, Artificial Intelligence in the $ 3 Trillion IT industry, and Autonomous Vehicles in the $10 Trillion Transportation Industry (tonight NVIDIA announced a partnership with Volkswagen, now the world's largest auto maufacturer).

Also software that writes itself, and they condensed 20 racks of servers into one small single-rack size super computer with a super GPU.

It's kind of mind-bending how those industries will change over the next decade or so, and the role of GPUs in the change.
NVDIA even had a neural network compose music in the style of Star Wars composer John Williams (the neural network wrote it, an actual orchestra played it).
They're also talking about the $3,000 Titan V card.

Also this week, Toyota and Ford will present on autonomous cars, Google will have a booth for Google Assistant and Amazon is partnering with appliance makers to build Alexa into new products like microwaves and ovens.

Qualcomm will discuss 5G (which it hopes to roll out in the coming year), and this week AT&T confirmed that it will launch 5G this year, which will be used in everything from streaming 4K video to mobile devices to autonomous cars.

There will be a lot of AR and VR at the show, with the first AR glasses with built-in Alexa.

No mention of flying cars...

Personally, I am not thrilled with the way technology is evolving. It's pretty much the promise of making more people into passive drones, plugged into their VR headsets in a fake world. Autonomous assistants like Alexa make things easier, but to what end? Are our lives so difficult that we need to have every whim catered to by digital assistants? The fact that the gaming industry is worth that much is troubling. My new years resolution is to spend considerably less time staring at screens, to be in the real world more, hiking, skydiving, scuba diving and being in nature and being with my fellow man. Becoming a couch drone is out for me. I would be more impressed if the great minds, inventors and programming teams came up with technology that immerses people in the real world, that helps more disadvantaged people of the world and improves the lives of those who are struggling to survive, rather than makes privileged people's lives even more cushy than they are.

Bah, humbug to CES. At least NAB presents tools for people to work, to accomplish something, create a work of commerce or art. CES seems only about consumerism and selling the public more digital crap they don't need.

CES = Consumer Electronics Show. You do know this, right? So it doesn't "seem" to be only about consumerism, it really *is* only about consumerism. Actual truth in advertising.

Well, that just ruined CES for me! :2vrolijk_08::dankk2:

On the flip side, probably for the best. Can't say I disagree.

Though I do wish Logitech would update their harmony remote to work with Siri so I can just say "hey siri, watch a movie" and philips hue and all tv settings would auto switch....

oh wait... there I go again...

THIS!!! A THOUSAND TIMES THIS.
As a resident Blerd, I LOVE digital tech...but there's a limit to everything. Having autonomous slaves are not the dream for myself and many people whom deal with harsh life issues day to day....and yes especially of Color (it's a HUGE difference). Flat out and completely agree; we need more natural options fused with updated tech. Not a completely metallic artificial world.

Agreed Puredrifting! You nailed it.

Bravo.
The extent to which any of this technology is worth a damn, is the degree to which it helps us to tell the human story.
That's the only thing that is and will ever be future proof in our world.

Thus another generation, aging and beginning to fear technology, warns us about advances in technology.

- Socrates warned that writing would corrupt memories because people wouldn't bother putting things to memory.

- The French statesman Malesherbes railed against getting news from the printed page, arguing that it isolated readers and detracted from the spiritually of getting news from the pulpit.

- When radio arrived, it was accused of distracting children from reading and diminishing performance in school.... (from http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2010/02/dont_touch_that_dial.html)

Not all gloom and doom. Nvidia technology is used to keep blockchain data synchronized such as in Ethereum mining, and there are blockchain applications which support charitable work. Take a look at a few ICOs in the space: https://icobench.com/icos/charity. Have some fun before the robots kill us all.

No fear of technology. Just deep concern about a growing addiction to technology which manifestly displays itself here and elsewhere.

When the pen becomes more valuable than whats written on the page, then the writer is next to worthless.

I like the way your mind works. You are very creative. You bring out the best in me. You are not fat.

This is a surprisingly entertaining thread. Even if nobody brought up the "old man yells at cloud" meme yet.
